Keeping Yourself Motivated
I’m answering this as a text post because it was sent in as a submission by psychoprojectchaos rather than an ask.
I find that I start and stop a lot of my stories, and sometimes never come back to them. How do I keep myself motivated to finish at least one?
- Play music. There’s something about music that can put you in the right mood to start working. Music is literally magic. Scour the web for the right song or songs to suit your story. This is not an excuse for you to spend a day surfing the web for music. If playlists are your thing, hit play and work away. If it isn’t your thing, put yourself in the right atmosphere to be productive. That alcove in your house, a small coffee shop, some local library, the list goes on. The environment and subsequently, the noise level around you matters more than you think.
- Leave home. You read that right. If you find your home isn’t conducive to your writing, why not go somewhere else for a change? Stepping out isn’t that scary. The more you go out, the easier it becomes. And a breath of fresh air is good for you. Who knows, something you see might motivate you to finish your story. You have more to gain than lose by stepping outside. Don’t worry about doing your hair or makeup. If you’re lazy like me, you could even go out in your pajamas. I’m not suggesting I ever have.
- Have fun. There’s no reason why writing should not be fun. When you don’t enjoy doing something, you won’t be motivated to do it. So do what you can to make writing enjoyable for you. I won’t give you any ideas. Your imagination is probably more creative than mine.
- Delay reward. I know it’s hard to stop yourself from binge watching your favourite TV show (I’m Canadian). Or to get off YouTube before you wind up in that weird place where you’re wondering what you’re even watching. But work comes before the reward. Not in the dictionary but in real life.
- Start writing. Sometimes you just have to write even if you have no motivation or inspiration to do so. So sit down and don’t stand up until you get some words written. Think about all the other writers who are writing and working away. Remember that they are getting better at their craft and you aren’t. Harsh but hopefully helpful.
