Do I think amourshipping should be canon? Pretty heavy question, Anon.
As an amourshipper, obviously I think that Ash and Serena actually becoming a thing would be pretty sweet and an interesting way to shake up the expectations people would normally have about the traditions that the anime has. Plus I just think it’d be cute :p.
However, what really matters to me the most about the show is the show itself. Just as it becoming canon could have positive aspects of change, it could also change it too drastically, which could ultimately have a negative impact on it. Everything would have to be handled in just the right way. And honestly, even from a shipping stand point it may not make the experience as fun. A good chunk of the enjoyment I get out amourshipping is Serena’s crush as a whole (how she gets flustered around Ash, how she reacts when people like Miette bring it up, etc.). If Ash and Serena were to finally get together, what happens next? Sure we can still get cute moments between the two of them, but the writers would have to come up with a whole new formula to show off their relationship (assuming they were to become canon and the show continues showing their adventures).
So to answer your question, it should be canon only if it’s handled right. The few “right” ways of doing it I could think of would include the show ending Ash’s run or the writers coming up with an effective and natural way to make the relationship work, and I hate to say it, but the most likely scenario doesn’t show either of these happening. So if I were to keep the best interests of the show as a whole in mind, signs would be pointing to no in terms of whether I think it should be canon or not. But hey, I’ve been in this fandom for less than a year, so what do I know?
Personally, as an amourshipper, all I need to be happy is proper closure by the XY(&Z) saga’s end. Closure that makes sense from a storytelling perspective. And if that means Ash and Serena don’t end up together, then so be it. But until that day comes, let’s have fun while it lasts. Don’t give up till it’s over.
Since the preview of the Miette’s return will be airing tomorrow and the episode itself isn’t too far away, I thought I would post a few things for people, especially amourshippers, to keep in mind.
1. Try to control your hype and you’ll be a lot more satisfied. Based on what this show has done in the past, it is extremely likely that the preview will show some of the shippiest moments. Be prepared to accept that there won’t be anything bigger than what is shown. I feel as though one reason some found themselves disappointed with XY059 is that the preview and previous screenshots gave away too much, leaving little to be surprised about. So basically just treat everything we see prior to the episode as the only major shippy things that will happen.
2. Don’t take the summary too seriously. The quote from the summary of this episode “She’s fired up and ready to do her best both when it comes to performing and love“ seems to get people excited for obvious reasons. But let’s not forget that the summary for XY059 claimed that Serena was “too distracted” to buy presents for the Pokemon, which is clearly not how the episode went at all. My point is don’t be surprised if all this “and love” claim amounts to is Serena and Miette talking about Ash for a bit.
3. Don’t reduce Miette as simply a love rival. This is more a personal thing rather than advice. Miette’s purpose in the show is to serve as a general rival for Serena, not just as competition for Ash as I’ve seen some reduce her to. Let’s give her the respect (as a character) she deserves.
4. No matter what happens, let’s cheer our girl on. It’s pretty obvious that there will be some amount of amourshipping in this episode, but that isn’t what the episode is about. It’s about Serena trying to advance in her dream to become Kalos Queen. I for one will keep my focus on hoping Serena fares better at this tripokalon after her tragic loss her first try. I want to see her have fun and succeed in her goals. The amourshipping will just be a bonus.
So after all this, am I saying not to get excited and hyped before this episode? Of course not! It’s okay to be excited! I know I am! I just want all of my fellow amourshippers to get as much enjoyment out of this episode out of this possible, and I believe keeping the previous points in mind and setting expectations to a reasonable level will do just that. Who knows? Maybe something big in the way of amourshipping could happen. Imagine how big of a surprise that could be if we just go into the episode like any other.
Anyway, even though it’s a week early, I wish Serena the best of luck in her showcase (and with Ash)!
Their epic love story continues...
