Meet Our Athlete - Madison McCallum

Madison (Maddie) McCallum has been a huge part of Outperforme for so long, we have lost track of the years.  We can not believe it has been seven years already!  She has always been the athlete that has worked incredibly hard with or without a strength coach present and carries this same work ethic into her figure skating and post-secondary education.  We are proud to call her a major part of the Outperforme Family as both an athlete and an employee and hope to keep it the same long-term.

This Holiday season we are thankful for all of our athletes, but extremely thankful we are to have Maddie around the Outperforme Family. She may not know it, but she is one of those who always brings a smile to our face. Now meet Maddie:

How long have you been training with Outperforme Athletics?

Maddie - I started training with Outperforme when I was 11, so for over 7 years now!

What is your most memorable accomplishment since joining Outperforme?

Maddie - I have had so many memorable moments/accomplishments since joining Outperforme to pick just one, but some that stand out to me are: qualifying for and competing at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, landing my first triple and most recently winning my 9th Provincial title and competing at my 7th Canadian Challenge.

What is your favourite exercise and why?

Maddie - My favourite exercise would have to be deadlifts or snatches and I also like core exercises.

How do you describe the concept of the Outperforme Family to someone who hasn’t trained here before?

Maddie - The Outperforme family is something truly special that I feel so lucky to be a part of. I think the best way to describe it is knowing that when you walk into the gym there will always be a friendly face to say hi to. You can expect a non judgmental environment where each person is on their own journey and pushing themselves towards whatever goals they have. You can count on being motivated by those around you regardless of their sport or background. It’s such a welcoming place with a feeling that leaves you eager to always hit the gym. It’s awesome!

What is something you have learned since joining the Outperforme Family?

Maddie - Since joining the Outperforme family I have learned many things about sport and people. A couple things that stick out in my mind include what it takes to be a professional athlete, that without failure there is no success, how to come back and work harder after disappointments and how exhilarating success is whether it’s in the gym or on the ice.

What is your most memorable Outperforme Training moment?

Maddie - Narrowing it down to my most memorable Outperforme training moment is a difficult task, but one would have to be when Sean told Kirsten and I that we were doing kettle bell ladders and proceeded to demo by doing a ladder drill while doing kettle bell swings (so not what the exercise is) but in our gullibility we totally believed him… that definitely made for a good laugh!

How does training with Outperforme prepare you for skating competitions?

Maddie - Training with Outperforme prepares me for skating competitions in numerous ways. Firstly, by ensuring that I am in great physical condition. Second, by giving me confidence in my strength and physical abilities that I can apply onto the ice. Third, by teaching me to push myself no matter the circumstance. Lastly, to Outperforme my competition.

How do the coaches at Outperforme support you all season long?

Maddie - The coaches at Outperforme are outstanding. I receive tremendous support from them all season, not only from my own coach, Sean, but from all the coaches. They do everything they can to help me reach my goals and prepare for my season and also keep an eye out from me in the gym to make sure I’m doing things properly or to answer any questions I might have. They also motivate me to be the best I can, instill confidence in me, and give me a pep talk or pick me up when I need it after a bad day.

What is one piece of advice you would give to Outperforme Athletes in regards to their training?

Maddie - If I could give one piece of advice to Outperforme athletes in regards to training it would be to push yourself past what you think your limits are, because you can go farther than you think. The extra work you put in will pay off in the long run, so take pride in your training and be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.
