Bewitched Samantha Stephens Elizabeth Montgomery classic tv feminism 60s sitcom okay prepare yourself for a long babbling in the tags as much as i loved this show as a child - i would often get so angry and frustrated with samantha i couldnt understand how someone - thats as beautiful and powerful and charming as she is - would allow darrin to talk to her like that as a girl growing up on shows like buffy - seeing samantha was an infuriating contrast but as an adult ive begun to notice more subtle things about bewitched samantha is always painted as the perfect doting loyal housewife who suppresses her true self for her husband so he'll love her now part of that is true the other part is that samantha is actually far more progressive than surface glance in the first place - she is MORE POWERFUL THAN DARRIN and he cant do anything but keep asking her to promise not to use her powers so he can retain a facade of the typical male role theyll pretend he's the big mighty man and shes the little woman who needs taking care of but thats not what happens...EVER everyone knows that samantha is an all powerful witch who can do whatever she wants she chooses not to for the sake of her husband (cue endora retching) of course she often kowtows to her husband much to endora's (and the audience's) costernation but she also lies to him a lot and goes behind his back lol she does what she needs to do regardless of what hissy fit darrin will throw and even when samantha is playing the perfect housewife to soothe her husband - the SHOW very clearly portrays darrin as in the wrong despite what samantha may be saying or doing - the narrative shows darrin as bein a jerk and how hes being suppressive whether its from their dialogue or from the interjection of supporting characters - darrin is the asshole the writing the acting the direction – everything - makes sure you see that bewitched doesnt try to make us believe that darrin is RIGHT to act the way he does - in fact - they tell us hes wrong ironically even though samantha is known as the ultimate perfect housewife - bewitched is one of the 1st feminist tv shows in history
