Francis Gadbois will graduate from l’École de Cirque de Québec, in June 2013, with a box manipulation number. His theme is based around a librarian who, due to extreme repetition of boring tasks, amuses himself by messing around with the books after hours.
Francis came to me with the project of making a video inspired by this idea. The routine itself is so precisely explored that I didn’t have to do a lot in the ways of research, however there was one short film (The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.) which strongly inspired the idea to find and film in a beautiful library. After some negotiations, Francis managed to hire the Morrin Centre, in Quebec City, for a couple of hours one morning.
We didn’t have a lot of time, or a big budget, so we had to cut some corners. It was a very rushed morning of filming, with a simultaneous photoshoot, but we got almost everything we wanted, although unfortunately we hardly had any time for b-roll.
From the very beginning I knew I wanted it to be very warm, a feeling which instantly installs “old man infront of the fire with his pipe". Of course I didn’t want to go too far, not all the way sepia and make another cliché old-fashioned jittery silent movie. It took 4 layers of effects and colour grading for me to get to the atmosphere I wanted, and it turned out pretty much exactly as I hoped!
I present “Francis Gadbois - books and boxes".
