Donal Barrington wrote an influential Studies article on “Uniting Ireland” in 1957. He argued that there were “two parties of Irishmen” not one Irish nation. Partition not only because of the British government. Donal Barrington also wrote in 1957:

“Little is to be gained by counting all the Tory leaders who came to Ireland to speak to the Orangemen and ignoring all the Orange leaders who went to England to speak to the Tories.”
