Q: How can I manage my aging loved one’s medication schedule?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Start by keeping a list of each medicine he or she is prescribed. Also include any over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements they take regularly. Before creating a medication schedule, present this list with his or her doctor and or pharmacist to ensure there is no potential for negative interactions between medications. Once you have the okay to administer each drug, your pharmacist can tell you when and how they should be administered. A pillbox can help you stay organized.

Q: What are some health risks associated with home care?

Q: Is insomnia common among caregivers?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Insomnia is a common complaint, especially among women who provide around-the-clock care to a sick or aging family member. Trouble sleeping may be caused by everything from an underlying health condition to stress and long working hours. Drinking alcohol and eating sugary foods close to bedtime can also keep you awake.

Q: What is caregiver stress?

Marla Ahlgrimm: Caregiver stress is that which is incurred by people who devote their time and energy into the care of others. It is often triggered by a lack of self-care, poor diet, and interrupted sleep. If you begin to feel stressed and continually fatigued, ask another family member or close friend to give you a day off every once in a while to do something nice for yourself, which can give you a virtual reboot and help you continue your labor of love with a fresh set of eyes and a rested mind.
