If you’ve reached 21, you may think your body is done changing until menopause. But women’s healthcare expert Marla Ahlgrimm says that nothing could be further from the truth. Keep reading for more information on how things can change in your 20s and 30s.

20s

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, female hormones kick into high drive in your early to mid-20s. This can lead to painful cramps as your body gets ready for motherhood. Prostaglandins, a mix of hormones that assist the uterine lining, peek at this stage of life. Another unpleasant side effect of hormones is acne. It’s not uncommon for women in their mid-20s to experience their first round of pimples, and they can be difficult to get rid of. Although hormones are largely to blame, stress, a carbohydrate overload, and smoking along with heavy cosmetic creams and foundations can make acne worse.

If cramping and skin trouble weren’t bad enough, Marla Ahlgrimm says that women in their 20s enter into the world of risks associated with sexual activity. Bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections and, sexually transmitted diseases are all extremely common and all equally unpleasant. Sexual intercourse, especially with more than one partner, poor nutrition, and alcohol consumption all contribute to sexual and reproductive health.

30s

You’re still not out of the woods when you enter into what most young women consider “real” adulthood. When you’re in your 30s, your body is still changing. One notable area says Marla Ahlgrimm is bone and muscle loss. Bone and muscle loss can trigger a metabolism meltdown, making weight easy to gain and hard to lose.

Marla Ahlgrimm reports that around your 35th birthday, fertility will start to drop, which can cause sleep disturbances, anxiety, and unpredictable periods.
