Julie Barton didn’t anticipate writing a memoir. At a certain point in her life, she didn’t envision getting off the kitchen floor. But Barton did survive to write about her experience with depression in “Dog Medicine: How My Dog Saved Me From Myself.” A large audience came to Library Headquarters on July 21st to hear Barton talk about the book, her life, and the dog that enriched both.

Former TV journalist Jennifer Blome emceed the program. Blome is now Director of Humane Education for St. Louis’ APA. As such, she provided insight into the therapeutic benefits of pet ownership. Julie Barton’s life is a testament to how unconditional love from an animal can help a human heal.
