Trans Youth Are Significantly More Likely to Have an Eating Disorder | Broadly

Eating disorders are typically associated with cisgender women, but research shows that trans youth are four times more likely to suffer from them.

ryansallans:

Research on mental and physical health needs of ‪#‎transgender‬ youth is largely lacking, and I become annoyed when research talks about ‪#‎LGBT‬ youth but they are really talking about LGB. Don’t get me wrong, the LGBQ is very important and I WANT that research too (and use it heavily), but I also want defined numbers to train people on surrounding trans youth.

As I continue to shuffle through articles (research based and commentary) I find ones to share, like this one regarding ‪#‎eatingdisorders‬ and transgender youth.

This article is a must read. I am thankful for the folks recognizing the gap in research and recognizing that we need to create programs that are inclusive.

In November, I will be speaking about gender identity and eating disorders at the Renfrew Center Foundation Conference in Philadelphia. In the past, I’ve spoken at the National Eating Disorders Association Conference on this topic, it is a vast topic where we have to look at not only gender identity and expression but also the impact of lack of support systems, racism, marginalization, barriers to care and financial access…but I know if researcher, funders and policy makers keep stepping up, we can hopefully help in decreasing eating disorders through the increase of acceptance, support and love.
