Kida would have been a Graeco-Mediterranean, I.e. Caucasian with a nice tan. I don’t know why she’s always hailed as a POC. There are so many other Disney character who are, why use a bad example?
@cherenoble, this whole comment is a mess from start to finish and judging by the blackout post on your blog, it seems like you’re some kind of racist but I’m gonna bite.
- First of all, Caucasian =/= white as you’re implying . That is inaccurate and totally offensive since many Caucasians neither identify as white nor pass as white in American terms. If you’re not from the Caucasus (which covers countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Iran etc.), then you’re not Caucasian, period. You should go ahead and check out thisiscaucasian cos you clearly don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.
- Plato and other historians such as Herodotus (who actually travelled and actually met people known as the “Atlantoi” in Libya-probably due to their proximity to the Atlas Mountains) have specifically cited Atlantis as being located in Africa (specifically North Africa and even more specifically Libya.) [source]
Now to the film, if you were paying attention instead of talking shit, you’d see that there are plenty of sources inside and outside of Atlantis that prove that despite being a mythical race, Kida and her people are coded as PoC (much like Naveen from The Princess and The Frog).
- First and foremost, Kida was modelled after her incredibly prolific voice actress, Cree Summer who is black/multiracial. Do either of them look tanned white to you?? Clearly you don’t know what racial coding in animation is or how it works.
- The “tribal” masks which are depicted in the film have clearly been inspired by certain (West and Central) African and Indigenous cultures.
- The presence of “tribal tattoos” possessing deep spiritual/cultural significance as with many Indigenous societies– funnily enough Kida is the only Disney princess to have tattoos and she gains new markings once she becomes Queen. In many (non-white) cultures, tattoos and body adornments can symbolise status and various rites of passage.
- All the Atlanteans possess dark skin, broad noses and thick lips– in contrast to the white characters like Helga, Milo and Vinny Santorini (who btw is the only “Mediterranean” character in the movie). The other PoC in the movie (Mestiza Audrey and African-American/Native American Dr Sweet) both have those features as well in varying degrees. These characters are not drawn like this by mistake.
You are literally the only person who doesn’t know (or want to know) that Kida is a PoC…even though Disney have coded her as such..even though historians have pointed to the non-white roots of the legend…even though she’s modelled after her non-white voice actress…

I have not played it, no. It’s on my ridiculously long list of Things I Need to Get Around To. I’ve heard mixed opinions on it so I haven’t exactly prioritized it, but I do hope to get to it someday.

So apparently Teen Titans Go and Young Justice are having a crossover episode, where the stars of the cancelled show appear to complain that the characters in TTG aren’t serious enough, leading to them having a YJ-styled adventure for an episode… can’t help but feel a touch wary about this to be honest…
Judging by the Easter eggs in the show, the people behind TTG love YJ, so this might turn out pretty well… even if it is partly a response to the criticism the show gets.
Could they bring back Young Justice if it gets a good response?!?!

Shoe’s comment got deleted and many people are reporting that they can’t see TB’s comment anymore
Yep, this is true. I was just there not long ago to get an updated screen cap of the like bar (dislikes are 8,000+ now, Likes are around 400+) and looked through the comments.
TB’s, Sh0e’s, and Sargon’s comments are nowhere to be seen.
I’m sorry but apparently judging and discriminating people based on their skin tone isn’t racist when talking about white people.
Bitch, that argument doesn’t hold up outside of the United States or Tumblr. I’m sorry. The Dictionary Definition is the universally accepted definition. You don’t get to pick and choose a word’s meanings to suit your agendas.
Fuck off. If you discriminate based on skin tone, you’re racist. Sorry, honey. You don’t get to sit on the moral high ground if you discriminate against white people just because they’re white. Fuck off. You’re as bad as the bigots that discriminate against black people cause they’re black.
Judge people based on their merits, deeds and actions, not by their physical appearance or traits that they have no control over (Skin tone, Gender/Sex).
Goddamn. I swear, if I see another post saying “You can’t be racist against white people.” I’m going to slam a dictionary against your damn cheek. The ones with the thick covers, not the paperback bullshit.
Goddamn Tumbrinas.
Just remember that the Dictionary Definition does have an exception.
Namely, modern feminism—whose actions don’t line up with its definition anymore.
Your post is on point regardless, however.
Modern Feminism isn’t “Feminism”, per se. It should really get it’s own fancy little word.. Chauvinism sounds more fitting, for example? ouo I could just call them chauvinists (cause they are) but then no-one would really get that I’m talking about the radical feminists.
Ah well.
