The father factor
Lots of kids get their first taste of baseball from their dads - a game of catch, a place on a T-ball roster, a trip to the ballpark to see the big leaguers play. But not every kid has the same kind of father.
“Deesh” Downs, a McNair Scholar from Wilmington, Del., is looking into how young urban African-American men (ages 18-25) see fatherhood. With her research, focused on Wilmington, she hopes to introduce others to their views of that status and the challenges they see as they consider being involved in the lives of their children. Her major is human services, with a concentration in clinical services. Her minor is urban education.
When she’s not studying, Deesh builds her home team - enjoying time with family, friends and the inner-city adolescents she works with in Wilmington. “Working with adolescents is such a fulfilling, highly rewarding experience,” she said. “It gives me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of every decision and challenge in my life.”
