Consumption of the Slimes ⊟

I just thought it was important that you see this sequence – which happens 4-5 times in each level of Ambition of the Slimes. You position your otherwise weak, fragile slime units near an enemy, then “claim” them… during which the enemy sprite’s head ratchets around 90 degrees, its mouth opens up, and your slime dives in, gradually working its way down their gullet, complete with glug-glug sounds. It’s equal parts repulsive and hilarious – if only because the pixel art mercifully limits the level of detail.

And then the other characters react. In all the early stages, the enemy soldiers vocally write off the encroaching slimes as target practice at best, then exclaim in shock when a slime just hops down in there.

This central mechanic adds a twist to the strategy gameplay, turning tough enemy units into valuable assets in a single turn, and requiring the player to balance the useful slime abilities like speed or slow magic, against the hardier, stronger nature of hijacked human enemies.

But it also adds a twist to the way each battle plays out narratively; rather than two confident armies facing off on the battlefield, one advancing force of silent, uncanny weirdos just absolutely freaks out the other force, again and again. It’s either a meaningful shift in strategy game dynamics or just funny. Either way, I’m into it.
