Jorge Ramirez, through process-oriented artworks, sound, sculpture, actions and curatorial projects, explores emergent phenomena as a window to the uncanny. His work relies on computational logic to investigate perception, augmentation, human experience, consciousness and materiality.
He has been guest artist and lecturer at Polytech Science Museum in Moscow; Royal Institution of Australia; Tsinghua University in Beijing; Institute fuer Musik und Medien, Koln; Universtitat der Kunste, Berlin; ZHDK Interaction Design department, Zurich; and CENART, México. His work has been exhibited in México, China, Japan, Australia, Russia and throughout
Europe. Jorge’s work has been featured in national and international media outlets such as Wired, Archdaily, Vice, Global Times (CH), Resident Advisor (JP), Afisha (RUS), Código DF, Expansión, La Jornada, Milenio, among others.
Space Matters: Project Plan
My proposal to participate in the residency would be to produce the art piece from my research, “Space Matters”, which I began work in since 2016. Space Matters was presented and included in the Astronautical Space Federation proceedings, “Contemporary Arts Practice and Outer Space: A multi-disciplinary approach, International Astronautical Federation”, in 2017.My research was based on images captured at the International Space Station, in an experiment of material sciences in zero gravity. Under these unique conditions of material analysis, I proposed a series of computational processes to analyze and express material behaviors similar to biological life and use visualization and data analysis as a scientific and artistic tool. The art piece would be a series of 3d printed sculptures developed from ISS images and then
I will apply slime mold to find the shortest path maze on the topology. Comparing material morphogenesis and emergent properties in zero gravity with biological morphogenesis, establishing a sci-fi narrative of life origins. The use of slime mold, “Physarum polycephalum” intelligent capabilities to find the
shortest path maze, has been demonstrated in many studies mainly from Toshiyuki Nakagaki at Hokkaido University, in which he designed a plastic maze, placed blocks of agar packed with nutrients at the start and end of the maze, the slime mold had retracted its branches from dead-end corridors, growing exclusively along the shortest path possible between the two pieces of food.
