Title: An Introduction
Character: Shaun Murphy
A/n: Y'all we only have episode one and I’m already obsessed as hell with this show and all the characters, bless.

Also! I’m still trying to work out the best way to write for Shaun, but if you have any suggestions for writing an autistic character, I am more than happy to hear them!

You let out a short mumble of curses as you realized the collar end of your lab coat had gotten stuck in your car door.

“Claire’s gonna kill me.” You said once you manage to free your coat from it’s trap, now trying to shove it on while simultaneously pulling your umbrella out of your bag.

You then began to half-run-half-jog to one of the enterences of the hospital, taking a brief moment to shake out your umbrella before tucking it back into it’s cover.

You had just managed to tie the strings back together when you noticed a younger fellow pacing outside the walkway. His posture was ramrod straight, but his hands were fumbling together and he looked a little shaken up.

“Excuse me?” You asked, slowly coming up behind him.

He whirled around, his shoulders jutted up and he took a step or two away from you. His eyes firmly planted on the concrete ground.

“Is there something I can help you with? You looked like something was troubling you.”

“Yes, uhm,” He broke himself off, still avoiding making contact with you. “I was just uh,” His eyes trailed up your white coat, and that was only when he breifly met your gaze. “There was a patient, a little boy, who was admitted not too long ago. It’s very urgent that I find him, he needs an echocardiogram.”

You took in the information, giving him a small nod before quickly fishing your pager out of your coat pocket. “Yup, he’s right here,” You said, showing him the screen. “I can assure you he’s in good hands though, they’ll-”

“No, they don’t understand. I need to get into the hospital,” He said, his speech quickening and his tone becoming more urgent. “I already tried to tell them, but they didn’t listen to me. Can you get me inside?”

It was an odd request, and you couldn’t decide if it was the tone of his voice or the way he looked like he might implode if he didn’t get inside, but you ended up giving him a nod.

“Alright, come with me.” You said, walking past him while making a motion for him to follow beside you.

You noticed one of the guards giving your new companion an annoyed look once you both reached the door, and you glanced back at him before placing your hand on his shoulder for a breif second, not noticing the way his shoulders stiffened slightly.

“Wait here.” You left him at the enterence, the guard already hot on your heels the moment he saw the other man inside the hospital.

But after a short amount of convincing, he begrudgingly let you both pass.

You ran back to the man and smiled. “You’re good to go, they’ve probably rushed him to surgery so I’ll take you there.”

He nodded, following behind you as you began navigating the hospital.

“This is probably a given, but are you a doctor?” You asked behind your shoulder, still moving down the hallway at a fast pace.

“Yes.”

“How come you were kicked out then?”

“There was another doctor who had me escorted out whenever I tried to mention the echocardiogram. She was rather mean.”

Surprisingly, you let out a short laugh. “Oh, that must have been Claire, she’s a bit intense during work hours.”

From behind you, he went to continue the conversation but was cut short.

“There you are!”

You turned to see Claire power walking down the hallway, Dr. Melendez following close behind her.

“I think my work here is done,” You said, nodding to your former companion. “Good luck.”

You attempted to work out the small knot that had formed in your neck while you made your way to the cafeteria for some source of caffeine. You didn’t want to almost pass out in the elevator again.

And as soon as you entered the room you went after the closest coffee cup you could manage to find.

“Miss!”

You halted your steps and turned around, noticing the man from earlier looking right at you.

“Hello again.” You said once you reached the table, leaning your hand against the chair across him.

“Hello.” He repeated, smiling as he nodded.

“Did you need anything?”

“No, I realized that I wasn’t able to thank you properly for helping me get into the hospital earlier. So, thank you.”

You nodded. “It’s not a problem, you saved the kid’s life,“ You said, placing the coffee cup on the table. “But I never got your name?”

“I’m Shaun Murphy.”

You smiled, happy to finally put a name to the face. “Hello, Shaun. I’m-”

“Dr. (Y/f/n).” He answered for you.

You’re brows knitted together. “How did you?”

“It was on your name tag,” Shaun replied, pointing to it. “I noticed it because your coat collar is all messed up.”

You looked down at your frumpled collar and laughed, trying to smooth it down discreetly. “I got it stuck in my car earlier,” You said before turning to him with an outstretched hand. “But it’s nice to be properly introduced to you.”

There was a brief pause in Shaun’s movements, but eventually he reached out to shake your hand.

“Would you…Do you want to sit down with me?” He asked, noticing that you were still standing.

Just then, your pager went off and you smiled at him. “I’d love to take the break, but work awaits me,” You said, pushing yourself off the chair to leave. “But I’ll see you around, yeah?”

Shaun’s gaze was now on his empty tray. “I’d like that.”

“Until then, Dr. Murphy.” You said, taking a couple steps before turning to wave at him once he looked up again.

He looked confused for a moment, then he waved back. “Goodbye, Dr. (Y/l/n).”
