There are two competing streaming documentaries about the now notoriously disastrous luxury music festival scam and both films offer some pretty crazy real-life drama laid out in compelling fashion.

Employing a ton of very enticing behind-the-scenes private footage slickly edited together, Netflix’s Fyre doc proves to be a fairly indicting, polished work with plenty of blame expressed while being laser-focused on the antics of organizer/co-founder Billy McFarland—since convicted of wire fraud.

Fyre Fraud (dirs. Julia Willoughby Nason & Jenner Furst).

Hulu’s version actually employs McFarland as its centrepiece interview as he proves totally useless as a hollow character devoid of any remorse or even self-awareness and offers no answers for his destructive (ultimately fraudulent) actions. Aiming to put the festival’s events into a larger societal “influencer” context including how sociopathic con men use people, it just isn’t as put together or focused on its subject matter.
