Star/producer Margot Robbie elevates the Depression-era Dust Bowl period drama about a disillusioned young man named Eugene (Finn Cole) who falls in love with a fugitive bank robber when she hides out in his family barn. It’s a mix of classic American gangster folklore wrapped in a tall tale of historical fiction. Dreamland illustrates the time’s downbeat dreaminess with a dusty sheen to its period look.

Stripped to its basic coming-of-age story, an unseen Lola Kirke narrates the film as an older version Eugene’s sister to give an extra mythical remove from the era’s fatalistic sense of desperation.
