The Avengers directors misfire with their exploitative awards bait drama starring Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, as a PTSD-afflicted army veteran turned opioid-addicted bank robber in the pulpy character piece based on Nico Walker’s memoir of the same name. What results is an entirely embarrassing bid for prestige.

It’s a borderline unwatchable mess devoid of any restraint in employing seemingly every bombastic cinematic trick in the book. Constructed as dizzying melange of overwrought direction, Cherry treats serious problems plaguing so many middle Americans as a means to showcase a naked sense of vanity in its misunderstanding of human suffering.
