Apple’s dramedy series about a hapless Los Angeles musician turned schoolteacher mines Gordon-Levitt’s own neuroses for both better and worse. His sheer creativity and natural talent for storytelling gets better as the show goes along, but there’s an unfocused quality that slows any momentum. The best episodes are the most self-contained and loose ones where his natural creativity shines through anxiety in the ordinary.
