Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood (dir. Richard Linklater).

Narrated by Jack Black, Netflix’s earnest rotoscoped animated film, loosely based on Linklater’s own childhood growing up in Houston near NASA headquarters, plays with our nostalgic memories of the space age and the summer of ‘69 moon-landing.

Ostensibly a fable-like story reminiscing about coming of age during a specific era in time and place, how it recreates a bittersweet collage of fantastical history through the perspective of a child brings to light our heightened perceptions of the past. There’s a home movie storytelling quality to the animation with montages galore looking back fondly at the highlights of a free-range childhood.
