RRR: Rise Roar Revolt (dir. S.S. Rajamouli).

Tollywood’s maximalist work of historical fiction about two real-life Indian anti-colonial revolutionaries and freedom fighters in 1920 Delhi is an absurdly fun viewing experience. Starring two heavyweights of Telugu cinema in N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, RRR’s epic three-hour runtime features everything from blisteringly surreal action sequences to elaborately choreographed musical dance numbers and even an extended romantic comedy interlude done totally earnestly.

It’s hard to truly convey just how absolutely wild and over the top the Indian film truly is. Everything executed in RRR is just so sincerely done and realized including its massive sequences involving CGI animals and pretty violently bloody fight scenes. There’s something for everyone with its purely joyful expression of Indian history and culture remixed into a major blockbuster spectacle.
