Catherine Called Birdy (dir. Lena Dunham).
Based on the 1994 children’s novel by Karen Cushman, the medieval film adaptation stars Bella Ramsey as the eponymous headstrong fourteen-year-old noblewoman living in thirteenth century Lincolnshire who runs up against her patriarchal surroundings as the only daughter of a cash-strapped English lord looking to marry her off for profit. Dunham’s anachronistic liberties taken with the source material make the delightful story a more enjoyable feminist experience including the use of familiar pop song covers to create the feel of a contemporary teen movie.
