Much Ado About Nothing (dir. Joss Whedon).
Whedon’s charming adaptation of this comedy of errors really brings out the screwball nature of Shakespeare’s work, very much in the vein of Howard Hawks (think His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby). He merges his own style and tone nicely while faithfully adapting the bard’s original work. Filmed in his home over twelve days, it has a breezy, off the cuff, naturalistic feel with its ensemble cast of veteran actors. Amy Acker, in particular, shines as the feisty Beatrice going up against Alexis Denisof’s brutish Benedick. Much Ado proves itself a worthy interpretation and delightfully cinematic experience.
