A 3D-PEN LEADS TO WEIRDNESS

In the spirit of new digital technologies… I bought myself a 3D-pen!!

To be honest… I’m a little disappointed.
The pen was marketed as being “a great gift for children” so I naturally assumed it would be really easy to use… I was wrong!! It’s really difficult to use!

I suppose it works a little like a hot glue gun. You load the coloured plastic filament into one end, the pen heats it, and it’s melted state comes out of the pen nozzle… simple right? I wish! It’s very hard to control, and like a hot glue gun is quite stringy, and twirls and swirls all over the place.

These are the messy first samples I managed to make look like anything at all… and even they’re not great!

I’m disappointed because I thought this would be a great, and easy way to translate my flat drawings into 3D shapes… but it looks like it’s going to take me a lot of practice to master this skill (and I’m not sure that’s exactly time I have).. however, I do like the idea of using this as a joining material… perhaps if I use it in conjunction with samples I’ve already made, it could provide more use to me.

I did manage to make this little guy… he isn’t perfect… but he looks a little like the shapes I’m currently working with…

I love experimenting with new techniques, materials, and technologies… so, while this tool didn’t quite do what I wanted it to do, I don’t consider it a failure. I’ll learn from these mistakes, and move on.

There are many more samples to make…

Stay tuned…
