Akiba Maid War 9: The Beginning of The End
I don’t really think I had ‘self-deprecating hallucination of a talking fish’ on my bingo card for Akiba Maid War, but, it’s there. How on Earth P.A Works is coming up with the content of these episodes and having it feel so natural I have no idea. Of course, it starts with a well defined character, which the manager is, but how you come up with this execution? Beats me.
Anyways, the episode as a whole. I was a little confused, but very interested, in the debt collector getting so much screen time today, and I guess by the end we find out why. Some really fresh comedy from him which I appreciate, giving us a look at the concept of the series from a different perspective.
Perhaps overall a bit less comedy and ridiculousness than prior episodes though, as hints are dropped and future events laid out in front of our characters. Like this customer that frequently visits Ranko, for example.
Don’t get it twisted though, the comedy is still very much there, it’s just in different places so that the story has a chance to seem serious.
Alongside the satirical and serious pieces of the episode, they even sneak in some really impressive (but not really flashy) scenes. Really caught me off guard with how well animated they are.
Overall though, certainly a strong episode despite being not quite as flashy as other entries. It definitely sets the stage for the 'Underground’ in Akiba Maid War to take center stage in terms of explicit story, and I’m really looking forward to that.
I mean, just look at the murderous intent on Nagi’s face. Seeing her old sister maid’s café be so insubordinate and reckless is definitely going to create some good moments to end out this series on.
