Throughout the past year, headlines have focused on the tragic aspects of the refugee crisis in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, where thousands took to the sea in search of a better future.

Amidst such a crisis, is the lesser told story of a handful of Greek islanders who opened their hearts to refugees and whose positivity drove them to rescue people from the sea, give shelter, and provide food and water.

Ode to Lesvos shines a light on Skala Sikamineas, an island with a population of just 150 people including fishermen Stratis Valamios, Thanassis Marmarinos and 85-year-old Aimilia Kamvisi who displayed uncompromising compassion towards half a million refugees who made the dangerous voyage across the Aegean Sea.

“Can you really ignore what’s in front of your eyes? Because tomorrow it could be me. I could be on a boat with my family and I would like to be helped,” says fisherman Stratis Valamios in Ode to Lesvos.

The uplifting support of three islanders whose uncompromising positivity in the worst of conditions has earned them a nomination for the coveted Nobel Peace Prize.
