The sentence ‘Rose is a rose is a
rose’ was written by Gertrude Stein as part of the 1913 poem 'Sacred Emily’, which appeared
in the 1922 book 'Geography and
Plays’. In the poem, it references that the first 'Rose’ is the
name of a person. As one of her most famous quotations, Stein
later used variations of the quote in her other writing and it is often
interpreted as a means to say 'things are what they are’

This beautiful image has a very special story. Before his death Fraser has been very keen to contribute to the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, but sadly was unable to complete any work. With this in mind Fraser’s wife kindly suggested and gave permission for a silkscreen to be made from a valentines card that Fraser had once painted for her, as she felt that the image was highly appropriate. Fraser created a valentines card for his wife every year of their sixty year marriage.
Created especially to raise awareness and funds for the British Heart Foundation. All profits go to the BHF.

Craigie’s Canary is a celebration of British artist Craigie Aitchison’s (1926-2009) life and work as well as a tribute from his friend and admirer Peter Blake. This hand-painted etching’s minimalism is an echo of Aitchison’s precise and simple compositions, its splash of colour reminiscent of the jewel-bright colours Aitchison loved to use. Aitchison kept canaries, they would fly about in his studio; as well as being a recurring motif throughout his work, the canary is a symbol of joy, illumination and innocence- and here it represents Craigie himself; a touching tribute to a dear friend.

McLean’s fascination with flora and fauna is inspired by his wife’s gardens in London and Menorca and has long been a central theme in his prints and paintings. Drawing particular inspiration from the dark shadows and flickering light created as the sun moves around, these artworks are directly related to paintings originally created 10 years ago which developed into the ‘Son Caragol’ series. Through mark making and layering motifs, McLean builds up depth and injects a bold and bright palette to recreate this lush, flickering environment.

Presenting NEW works by BRUCE MCLEAN
CCA GALLERIES are delighted to present two new silkscreen editions by BRUCE MCLEAN
Inspired by the Dream Garden Monotypes
released earlier this year, McLean has developed two stunning new limited
edition silkscreens with collaged elements Shades of Grey, Light Blue and Shades of Grey, Cerulean Blue.
In a limited edition size of 75 prints, each of the Shades of Grey silkscreens explore
deeper McLean’s dream garden vision with a refined focus on monochromatic
patterns and textures with pops of vibrant colours.
“In the intense
bright and blistering Menorcan light, it is sometimes necessary to make black
or grey works in response to the dark green, jungley garden (an endlessly
moving sculpture) containing plants - aloes, yuccas, palms, tiger grass,
cane, papyrus, phormium, cactus, agave americana, agapanthus, etc, punctuated
by pomegranates.” - McLean

@ Tate Modern,

“Made
up of a series of vivid and bawdy anecdotes, McLean’s first collection of
biographical stories echo the satirical tone of his art-making practice and
relate the invention of his life as an artist. Both funny (ha ha) and funny
(peculiar), this (non) po-faced history of art and comedy of (ill) manners
presents a compelling soundtrack of human behaviour, gesture politik and
inherited tics and traits.” - Mel Gooding

The Dream Gardens monotypes
are a series of 25 works based on his wife Rosy’s garden in Spain. McLean
uses colour and texture to create shadows, forms and the suggestion
of light to express his vision of his dream garden.
McLean has used also this theme to create his series of Garden Ware ceramics which debuted in
the V&A Ceramic Galleries for London Design Week this September.

In a series of 10 prints, Blake continues to explore the wrestlers - a major theme throughout his career. Blake has been a wrestling fan since childhood.
Using celebrity faces to achieve the implication of fame through his characters suggests their personalities and background, while the flags represent where they are from. Blake enjoys combining elements from reality with fictional details when inventing his wrestlers.

The Road to
Zennor monotypes are a series of 6 unique works. The
inspiration originates from a trip to Cornwall where Farley researched
into the Cornish Surrealist painter Ithell Colquhoun, who lived and worked in
Lamorna cove in the 1940’s. Farley revisited the historic sites that
inspired Colquhoun’s paintings such as stone circles, burial grounds and
standing stones in her nearby fields.
‘The Road to Zennor’ image began as a series of on the spot sketchbook drawings
in Cornwall, looking up from road level at the fields, stones and farm
gates on the way to Zennor. The criss-cross motif of the gate appears in each
of the six works as well as the tumbling boulders and approaching red sundown
sky. I’m fascinated by the traces of man’s work and sacred rituals that litter
this particular landscape whether it be the ravaged mines that are no
longer in use or spiritual Neolithic stone circles.'

World renowned as an equestrian
sculptor, Nic Fiddian-Green’s Horse
at Water limited edition silkscreen print is an edition size of 50 and
demonstrates the dramatic elegance of his iconic horse’s head.
Whilst studying at Chelsea School of Art, Fiddian-Green took a trip to the
British Museum and found inspiration in the shape of the head of the horse of
Selene.
'The encounter paved my future. It was as if lightning had struck twice in the
same place. The horse’s head was so beautifully made, so considered, so right.
It was as if it had been carved by the gods: a lesson in balance and harmony
and proportion. Immediately it became my benchmark. For the past 30 years I’ve
focused on capturing the beauty of a horse’s head.’
