alphabet, Blake has also included an additional print featuring ‘I’

The
gallery will be hosting a show of prints by Peter Blake from the 10th to 18th of June.
The summer show is exhibiting a combination of new limited edition releases as
well as rarer older prints. The exhibition is showcasing Blake’s use of mixed
media and collage and includes limited edition silkscreen prints, with collaged
elements, glitter, diamond dust and a stained glass edition.
Over the
weekend, the CCA Art Busmade an exciting appearance situated at
Whitstable Junior School. The bus is an iconic mobile work of by Blake, and a
mobile art gallery. Blake designed the bus in a groovy pop art style, with the
aim of creating a rock ‘n’ roll tour bus for art.
Based in the quaint seaside town of Whitstable, Chappell Contemporary opened in
early 2015, and is owned by Paula Chappell, who is a Wimbledon School of Art
Graduate.
The
gallery showcases work by established artists as well as emerging young talent,
whose work is exhibited and sold both in the UK and internationally.
Specializing in signed limited edition prints, they also offer unique originals
by a number of their gallery artists.
‘To host this show in Whitstable is
an amazing honour. This will be the biggest event to happen in the gallery and
we are so proud to announce this collaboration with CCA. I believe the show is
important not just for the gallery but for our small town. Whitstable will be
playing host to Britain’s most iconic Pop artist working in the UK today’.
The event was opened on Saturday 10th June with a private drinks reception.
To coincide with the arrival of the
Peter Blake Bus, the children at Whitstable Junior School have given this year’s Summer Fair an art theme.
Stalls will feature work produced by the children and it is intended that much
of this will draw on the inspiration of Peter Blake’s own work (for example,
self-portraits and collage) through in depth activities in school. The school
are also hoping to invite other local artists and craft makers to
host stalls and offer taster sessions for visitors at the Fair.
Throughout the
weekend, the school will ran their own art workshops,
including making a large scale community collage, in the spirit of
the iconic album cover, Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, designed by
Blake in 1967.
The
show is sponsored by Canterbury based business, Herringbone Kitchens. Herringbone
create individually designed, beautiful kitchens from their workshop in Kent, using
traditional techniques combined with modern machinery. They are a small family run
business committed to supporting the arts and independent art events across
Kent.
Thank you Chappell Contemporary for such a fun opening event!

“The opportunity to make a large scale screen
print made me evaluate many of the ways in which print evolves from the process
and how that responds to the way I make paintings. Printmaking has always been
a part of how I develop work fusing drawing, tone and colour.
My work is inspired by the natural landscape, in particular where the
boundaries of sea, sky and land come together and depart. I make the paintings
using thin layers of paint akin to watercolour in substance; using the
transparencies of the screen printing film was a new way of building an image.
Using early examples as a base, the context was developed through the
application of watercolour as the ability of the movement in the paint
responded to the ideas behind Sea Rock - where a rock within sight of the shore
becomes a landmark and guide for those on both land and sea. Encompassed by all
that the change of light and weather does to transform the known into the
mysterious.”

In a series of 10 prints, Blake continues to
explore the wrestlers - a major theme throughout his career. Blake has been a
wrestling fan since childhood.
Using celebrity faces to achieve the implication of fame through his
characters suggests their personalities and background, while the flags
represent where they are from. Blake enjoys combining elements from reality
with fictional details when inventing his wrestlers.

The Road to
Zennor monotypes are a series of 6 unique works. The
inspiration originates from a trip to Cornwall where Farley researched
into the Cornish Surrealist painter Ithell Colquhoun, who lived and worked in
Lamorna cove in the 1940’s. Farley revisited the historic sites that
inspired Colquhoun’s paintings such as stone circles, burial grounds and
standing stones in her nearby fields.
‘The Road to Zennor’ image began as a series of on the spot sketchbook drawings
in Cornwall, looking up from road level at the fields, stones and farm
gates on the way to Zennor. The criss-cross motif of the gate appears in each
of the six works as well as the tumbling boulders and approaching red sundown
sky. I’m fascinated by the traces of man’s work and sacred rituals that litter
this particular landscape whether it be the ravaged mines that are no
longer in use or spiritual Neolithic stone circles.'

The Dream Gardens monotypes are a series of 25 works
using hand painted and collaged elements on silkscreen prints. Based
on his wife Rosy’s garden in Spain, McLean uses colour and texture to
create shadows, forms and the suggestion of light to express his
vision of his dream garden. McLean has also used this theme to create a
series of ceramics called Garden Ware.

World renowned as an equestrian
sculptor, Nic Fiddian-Green’s Horse
at Water limited edition silkscreen print is an edition size of 50 and
demonstrates the dramatic elegance of his iconic horse’s head.
Whilst studying at Chelsea School of Art, Fiddian-Green took a trip to the
British Museum and found inspiration in the shape of the head of the horse of
Selene.
'The encounter paved my future. It was as if lightning had struck twice in the
same place. The horse’s head was so beautifully made, so considered, so right.
It was as if it had been carved by the gods: a lesson in balance and harmony
and proportion. Immediately it became my benchmark. For the past 30 years I’ve
focused on capturing the beauty of a horse’s head.’
CCA GALLERIES is delighted to be working with world renowned artist DANNY ROLPH.
Born
in London in 1967, Danny Rolph has been a professional artist for 24
years and has gained international acclaim exhibiting all over the
world. After completing his degree in Fine Art at the Winchester School
of Art he went on to achieve an MA in Painting at the Royal College of
Art. Since 2009 he has been a professor of Fine Art at Bucks News
University and has taught at various other post-graduate institutions
including the Royal Academy Schools and Royal College of Art. He is
currently represented by 532gallery Thomas Jaeckel (NYC) and Barbara
Davis Gallery (Houston). His work is held in many important private
collections including Facebook HQ, Speyer Tishmann, Goldman Sachs, Duke
and Duchess of Westminster as well as The Metropolitan Museum NYC and
The Tate Gallery London.
Rolph has been nominated for the Sovereign European Art Prize and Hamlyn
Award and has received numerous prizes including the John Minton Travel
Award, a Delfina Trust Award and the London Visual Arts Award. He was
also appointed Scholar at the British School at Rome. He lives and works
in London.
At
secondary school he discovered his love for art through an
inspirational teacher, Iain Rutherford, who gave him a book on Mondrian
and some oil paints and encouraged him to think with his hands. Danny
admires and is inspired by many artists including Uccello, Tiepolo,
Tintoretto, De kooning, Georgia O’Keefe, Agnes Martin, Georg Baselitz,
Sigmar Polke, Hilma of Klimt, Donald Judd, Jasper Johns, Thomas
Noszkowski, Julian Schnabel, Laura Owens and Chris Ofili.
World
renowned for his multi-layered, abstract, colourful paintings, his
seemingly chaotic work reflects the dynamism of his surroundings. He is
inspired by the cities of London, New York and Rome as well as the
deserts of West Texas and New Mexico, whose sunsets appear as a
recurring motif in the background of his work. His colour choices are
instinctive and deliberate and echo the environment around him. The
artist continually questions surface tension and spatial relations via
the mediums of Triplewall plastic and canvas surfaces, embracing doubt
and discovery within the creative process.
“I grew up in the sky, one hundred foot above City Road. The view
from our kitchen window contained sunset and sunrises of the type that
Tiepolo imagines populated by architectural silhouettes of St. Paul’s,
The Old Bailey and the Post Office Tower.” – Danny Rolph, in reference to East Central exhibition at CNB Gallery, 2016

A new silkscreen by DANNY ROLPH produced in collaboration with CCA GALLERIES at WORTON HALL STUDIOS.
Usually
finding inspiration in philosophy, poetry and history, Rolph wanted to
produce a print that related to his current interests in the studio.
Having only produced one silkscreen edition before, Rolph saw creating
this edition as an opportunity to allow him time to investigate the
process further, which he found informative and exhilarating in equal
measure. ‘Encounter’ will shortly be followed by another silkscreen edition.
“Recently I swam in the Indian Ocean and encountered colours,
animals and geology I had only previously seen on TV. The experience of
being in such a stimulating, other worldly environment influenced my
choices quite strikingly in ‘Encounter’. The objective
in using these particular shapes, forms and colours was to communicate
the experience I had in nature and to expand my visual vocabulary in a
new direction.” - Danny Rolph
