Anonymous asked: Beginner witch here. Do you have any good sources for spells? I've wanted to write my own but I have no clue how to start and what the requierements are for a good spell.
Basically you want to raise energy, focus your will on your goal, and direct the energy towards that particular purpose. The ingredients of the spell are meant to help you with these things. Now maybe what works for one person in a particular area is not going to work for you. A lot of American spell books link the colour green to money, but most of my money isn’t green. Green is not a colour that means “money” to me. I’m happier using silver or gold for that purpose. Sigils are pretty popular at the moment, as a way of channelling your energy through an image you create while containing the desired outcome in your mind.
I like reading old spellbooks for ideas; a lot of stuff isn’t going to work for me, but I can take aspects of it and work it to my purpose. The Element Encyclopaedia of 5000 Spells is a good one for that, although if you’re like me most of them aren’t going to be relevant for you. Many newer spellbooks write them like recipes, “take one dash rose quartz, invoke Venus and repeat this mediocre poetry”, but there are still some interesting ones out there. Personally I love a good knot spell. Simple, easy, few tools required.
I don’t know if there are any good websites for that sort of thing now. When I bothered looking online for that sort of thing a few years ago it was mostly recipe-spell sorts of things, and when you’re trawling for information you’re looking for some variety, like “mix menstrual blood with clay and fashion into a poppet”, “carve the initial of the person into a stone and throw it in the river”, that sort of thing. The thing to ask yourself when you’re reading a spell is “why is this included?” Use the wisdom thus gained to help you in writing your own.
It doesn’t have to rhyme. I’ve found when people try to force a rhyme it sounds awkward and may disrupt the spell for a lot of people. If you decide to use words - and you don’t have to use any, or you might want to only use a couple where you think it appropriate - think about metre and rhythm and flow and the onomatopoeia of words, and how that could be used to your advantage.
