The Informed Pagan

The Informed Pagan is a collaborative Pagan community that can be used as a resource for learning more about the various religions and practices that fall under the Pagan umbrella. A place where one can ask any question and expect thoughtful, honest answers, based not only on collective experiences, but currently available scholarly research.

Founded by a group of Pagans from various paths, we are dedicated towards promoting responsibility and integrity within the Pagan Community, through knowledge and awareness. Paganism is a very broad topic, and there is a ton of misinformation that has been perpetuated over the years, and unfortunately, very little has been done to stop it.

Most of us started out, as many do, rather “fluffy”, not knowing what we were doing, and often trusting what we thought were reliable resources, only to find that we’d been misled. The misleading wasn’t always done intentionally, but it was clear that there was a serious lack of genuinely reliable resources for those who were seeking a Pagan path. In talking about how far we had come and how embarrassed we were at some of the things we had once said and written (and yes we have ALL been there), we felt strongly that more guidance should be available for Pagans of all types. Talking about this wasn’t enough, and we decided we needed to take action. Which brings us here, to TIP.

The Informed Pagan is for anyone who needs a bit of help navigating the world of Paganism. If you are unsure of what you should be doing, which authors are reliable, or even what you believe, just ask. ALL QUESTIONS ARE WELCOME!! We have the knowledge and experience

Welcome, Devotees!

Building up a foundation for your devotional work? Try one of these:

  1. Home Maintenance: How organized are the materials you use in your religious practice? Take some time today to make sure that you have places for items that you use in your practice, but might not always have out in the open or on the altar. It’s also a good time to make sure that your non-perishable offering materials (e.g. candles, incense, matches/lighter, electric candle batteries) are easily found, easily accessible, and well-stocked.
  2. Self-Improvement: Find three ways you can ensure that you pray at your shrine every day. Examples: schedule set prayer times; before you go to bed, make sure tomorrow’s offerings are ready to go; think of ways to reward yourself if you keep up with daily prayers for a certain amount of time.
  3. Go Outside! Seeing other religions in action can be an inspiration to a religious practice that feels stagnant. It can also help us feel less alone. Today, look up local places of worship that are open to visitors, and visit one (or make plans to do so). While it’s not the goal of the visit, you might even find someone you can talk to about your practice. In the meantime, see how other religions live and thrive. Of course, this blog does not condone cultural appropriation–if you borrow from another tradition, do so responsibly!

Today in the Hellenic Calendar:

  • Today is the 22nd of the lunar month.
  • Today is the third day of the Lesser Eleusinian Mysteries. This week-long period of time allowed people interested in initiation into the Eleusinian Mysteries to start on their way, and featured dramatic performances that helped initiates to remember the lessons they had learned. We might not be able to recreate the Eleusinian Mysteries, but this is a good time for devotional work dedicated to Demeter and Persephone (and the other Eleusinian deities like Dionysos and Iakkhos).
  • If you like incorporating daily hymns into your prayers, Drew Campbell recommends the following prayers for today: To the Kouretes (male retinue/protectors of Zeus); and To Korybas (one member of a group of Mystery Gods called the Korybantes, who had ties to other groups like the Kouretes).

Daily Reminder: If you know of any resources you’d like us to incorporate on our site, or any sites/projects you’d like us to signal boost, send us an ask or fanmail!
