Devon Sproule’s 4 string

image

I had built a very simple cigar box guitar and wanted to push myself.  I tend to produce better quality when it’s for someone else, so I offered to build one for my musician friend Devon Sproule.

This project marked the first for many aspects of my building: scarf joint, piezo rod pickup, volume control, strings-through-the-body design, veneer on the head, and inlay dots.  I did it in early/mid 2012 and have no idea how long it took me, but a lot of research and trial and error went into the project.

Box: La Aroma de Cuba Monarch

Neck: Maple

Fretboard: Rosewood

Nut: Cow bone cut from my in-law’s dog’s abandoned chew bone

Inlay dots: hardwood dowel (maple?)

Fretwire: I’m not sure.  I know it was pretty standard stuff I purchased at a supplier here in Toronto.

Tuners: Standard geared tuners purchased at the Twelfth Fret guitar shop in Toronto.

Saddle: Rosewood

Bridge: ¼-20 bolt

Pickup: Piezo Rod

Pot: 250 K Bourns Audio-Taper Potentiometer

Knob: Used one from Twelfth Fret guitar shop in Toronto.

Jack: Probably from Radio Shack

Jack Plate: Recessed

Sound hole covers: Chrome Screened
