About Filming Emotional Scenes
Jared: A few [scenes] stick out to me. A few where Jared Padalecki, the professional actor, kinda got lost in Sam Winchester. And that’s almost a bad thing. I did a Christmas movie with Peter O’Toole. It happened in that movie as well, where sort of my emotions got taken over, even after they called cut. And he kind of called me over, and we walked to the side, and he said, “Save those, those are Tom’s [Jared’s character] tears, not yours.”
The most recent [example] I can think of is Sacrifice. Heart, the big scene in Heart, and then the one in Croatoan. Like, way back when. The scene where Sam is talking to Dean, telling him to leave. I think those three kind of stick out. They really got ahold of me, for whatever reason.
Jensen: There’s a couple that were tough to get over. One in particular was when Dean came back from Hell and was telling Sam about his experience of Hell. I don’t think I intended it to be that emotional, but whatever. The wave came, and I hopped on. When [the director] yelled cut, you know, you can mentally stop thinking about the things that are making you emotional, but you can’t turn that emotion off. Because your body thinks it’s real. Your brain knows it’s not real, but your body is reacting as though it is. And I had to take just a walk down the road half a mile, just to walk it off.
