There have been many instances where I have read people commenting that Olicity fangirls squeal when Oliver saves her but find the damsel in distress trope deplorable when it is Laurel he saves.
Well, as a fan of the show and Felicity Smoak, let me point out the reasons we do that. It’s not because we hate Laurel (we just think she is not crucial to the show any more) it’s because it is how the show has been written.
For starters, every time Felicity has been in trouble – right from the first time Dodger attached a bomb collar to her neck to Helena Bartinelli leaving her bound and gagged to the casino heist to rescue in Lian Yu and QC building to the doll maker incident to Count Vertigo taking her – she has been in trouble in the line of work, helping vigilante. She is Green Arrow’s partner and has saved his ass as many times as he saved hers. Whether she smacked the head of a gun man in QC building, rescued him after his mother shot him or called on to Barry to save him, she saved his life as well, so she is not just a woman in trouble but a partner who do not just take but also gives back and reciprocates. She never was the damsel in distress but a fellow collaborator who got caught in the line of fire and the other colleague has to come and save the one in trouble. Oliver has done exactly the same with Diggle but I do not see anyone calling John Diggle a damsel in distress.
Secondly, Felicity getting in trouble has mostly been part of the plan, at least twice – with doll maker and in underground casino – where she acted as the bait. It was not like she was being stupid and got herself into trouble; it was part of a scheme with her other partner/s nearby to get desired results. Even police conducts operations like that, so it was not something out of ordinary.
Thirdly, all the instances were important to the story line. They were not just props to make Oliver into a hero or Felicity into this girl in distress. Not only they unfolded the story and Oliver’s relationship with others (in case of Helena Bartinelli) but also developed a bond between the characters of Felicity and Oliver.
On the other hand, Laurel’s getting into trouble was never part of any plan and with the exception of episode 1x20 titled Home Invasion where it was used as a story line to propel Tommy to break up with Laurel; her damsel in distress act and follow up emotional drama has always had tropey reasons.
Secondly, Laurel getting in trouble did not really serve much purpose in getting the story ahead in any of the episodes the sole exception being episode 1x20.
Felicity gets in trouble, she gets saved and what does she do? She gets on with her work and her life. Laurel gets into trouble, she either goes permanently teary eyed or becomes a substance abuser or sleeps with a former boyfriend after professing love for the current boyfriend in the same episode. Forgive me if I don’t feel too charitable about that character but that is how she is presented to the viewers.
Felicity is NOT a damsel in distress, she is a partner in crime who sometimes gets in the trouble. Laurel, on the other hand, is the damsel in distress who continues to make one dim-witted decision after another (like saving files in CNRI in first season finale) which required three other characters – Oliver, Tommy and Detective Lance – to come rescue her and one of them died doing just that. So please, don’t lump the two characters together, it is almost as stupid as Laurel going to CNRI when she was warned not to go.
Can I just say it one more time; Felicity Smoak is NOT a damsel in distress, period.
Forever-erica said that Felicity Smoak went all Mafia wife in Arrow 2x18
MAFIA WIFE!!!!!!!
Now my next question is: Who is writing a Godfather AU where Oliver Queen is basically Michael Corleone avenging the death of his brother and his wife Felicity Smoak tells him to go, do whatever it takes!
