Parallels between the central characters

  • All three characters are first brought low between their respective opponent.
  • Initially, all three central characters refuse to fight, even though their opponent wants them to.
  • All three central characters eventually fight back, but in their own way, and on their own terms.
  • Even though they fight back, all three central characters stick to their morals.
  • All three central characters fight in the defense of others (his countrymen for Zuko, Fire Nation citizens for Katara, and the World for Aang).
  • Ozai views both Aang and Zuko weak when they refuse to fight.
  • Aang uses the Avatar State when he fights back against Ozai, Zuko uses his dao swords and lightening redirection, Katara uses the Moon.
  • Nice camera framing parallel between Ozai fighting Aang and Zuko, Katara and Zuko kneeling, and Aang and Katara rising.

Parallels between Hama and Ozai

  • Ozai and Hama both expect their opponents to fight, or want them to fight.
  • Ozai wants Zuko to fight and see his, and the Fire Nation’s methods as right. Likewise, Hama wants Katara to view her methods as right and just.
  • When their opponent refuses to fight, both Ozai and Hama try to get them to succumb to their whim.
  • Katara trusted Hama, and Zuko trusted his father.
