I’ve been trying to think of a caption and it’s been really hard because all I can think of is “I love my dog.” She’s made my world so much bigger and safer. I can’t say she’s helped me conquer all my fears because I still have many but they’re more livable now. I can act despite them. She’s helped me meet so many wonderful people and dogs. She’s taken me to so many new places and then some. She’s the first dog I’ve done any showing with, the first dog I’ve done organized sports with, and I’m so proud of all she’s accomplished in her lil three and a half years. I can’t believe how fast time has passed. I hope we have a lot more of it together. 1: A black and white image of a blonde person smiling at a poodle. And look at that! AKC singly pointed. FAQ: Wow Haley why are you looking so proud over something that people do fifteen times over at bare minimum? Thank you for asking! I am proud of my dog. I am proud of my wonderful, patient, brave little dog. She spent hours and hours and hours of her little life laying still, standing still, soaking in tubs, being brushed, being dematted, being wrapped and dried and sprayed up and bathed out. I’m proud of my introverted little dog who learned to be brave for exams. I’m proud of how much work she had to do and the insignificance of the achievement doesn’t negate that. I may be a lil proud of myself too, which is rare and maybe something to be celebrated in itself. I’m proud of the work I put in to go from 0 grooming and showing knowledge to maintaining a blue poodle in show coat while not compromising extra-show activities. I’m proud of completing an exemplary first year in veterinary school while maintaining her coat and putting several other titles on her. I’m proud of growing hair despite how much physical pain it caused me and I’m proud of showing despite it making me so anxious as to be physically ill. Wow I’ve gained enough new followers that it’s time for another intro post/cuttin em down post! Hi, I like dogs. I also like bad early 2000s nu metal, musicians named Ben, horror movies, and ghost hunting. I like camping out of my car and exploring abandoned buildings. Lemons are good, lemonade is really bad. I don’t like country music or comedy or Lord Huron’s newest album. I’m studying to be a dogtor with the end goal of a specialty. I have a few invisible illnesses (tbqh if you watch me close enough some of them are fairly obvious). Ed is my service dog. Jōnsi is the general disservice dog. I like dog shows and showing dogs and doing silly sports things with my silly dogs. I like R+ training a lot. I don’t rly ascribe to the “all training methods are valid uwu” mindset; present evidence shows that training methodology isn’t a matter of taste, it’s a welfare issue. I don’t think using aversive-based makes someone a bad person: we all have ways we can and should improve our care. But we SHOULD be improving, not just going with “what works.” I used to be a compulsion trainer with hunting dogs, then a “pretty good” balanced trainer. I had lots of stuff from leerburg, Michael Ellis, Dave Kroyer, etc etc. I was well-educated and knew how to “use tools the right way.” I’m in a STEM field, so I wanted to find science-based evidence to support my training methods when engaging online. I found the opposite and changed my methodology. Now I’m an almost professional: AVSAB has made a definitive statement on the current standard of behavioral care for dogs. I’m obligated to stay current with standard of care. I think folks can and should continue to use evidence-based methods to improve all aspects of canine welfare, including training. I am always happy to talk about training or offer resources if someone is working on a training challenge, wants input, etc. I’m not happy to debate methodology, but I can direct folks to resources for further reading. I can be slow to respond bc I study 40+ hrs a week outside of class time. Feel free to remind me to keep up! Thanks for reading, hello &/or goodbye, thanks for stopping by and maybe thanks for sticking around! https://www.instagram.com/p/CVlHGXvr4WZ/?utm_medium=tumblr

More Halloween store things :) we’re mainly just working on evaluating how she feels about all this, making sure she feels good about it, letting her look around with enough structure to help her make good decisions and not put herself over threshold. I’m really pleased by her willingness to engage me in this environment and how little she needs to look around. She doesn’t get punished for looking around, so I know that any focus she offers is because she feels comfortable enough to look at me over the environment and not because it’s “focus on me or get corrected.” I’m trying to get her to look at other things because we aren’t doing obedience training or anything, we’re there to let her explore. I’m still wishy washy about when/how to use her RTW procedure - in this context I feel like it was more a general gauge of her comfort vs gauging her ability to work. Is using it for both focused work and general shenanigans ok? I don’t know! Any input on that or anything else is appreciated :) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVYuFryLIoM/?utm_medium=tumblr

Shout out to @smoothandscrappy for not only taking these photos but at the same time also talking to the very nice and curious family. I was too busy snorting hairspray to explain why I was putting it on a dog in the woods https://www.instagram.com/p/CVN8htsgm_x/?utm_medium=tumblr
