Gave up on Cat Sebastian after seven books (I'll go back and try her 20th century period novels later since I'm told they might be better) and started reading KJ Charles's new Death in the Spires instead. Instantly grabbed by the heart, mind and balls (or whatever the female anatomy equivalent would be). No plodding, skimming or patience necessary. Already blown through 75 pages. If I had this much chemistry on every date with another human being I might actually marry them, and my jaded and divorced ass does not say that lightly.

It's a bit of a departure this time because it's a murder mystery set in the Edwardian era (which includes the 1890s for me personally bc if there's cars around Victoria is as good as dead) rather than yet another 19th century romance. The protagonist is queer and the vibe is def Be Gay Do Crimes but Charles has taken care to plaster everywhere that this is NOT a guaranteed HEA. Idk whether that means we're going to be left with an uneasy, reeling Agatha Christie ending or it just went without saying because why would a murder mystery have a HEA? I'm really interested to see whether Charles can pull it off though. She's the kind of confident and intelligent plotter that makes you think could write clever whodunits, so this feels like putting her money where her mouth gave the impression it might be. I don't know how but the Christie vibes are hella strong in this one, and the pacing is, as ever, a study in excellence.

Buckle up, European and Foreigner Tumblypoos, because I'm about to learn you a thing about AMERICA.

Image

You see these delectable motherflippers? These are called STATES. You stupid foreigners might not be able to wrap your head around this, but basically they're administrative subdivisions of the country.

And here's the thing: They are totally heckin' different from each other! For instance, New York:

Looks TOTALLY DIFFERENT from Kansas:

And they both look TOTALLY different from California!

So before you make fun of an American for not knowing where tiny third-world countries like "Check Republic" or "South Korea" are, maybe think about how much we have to learn about the unique regional differences in our OWN country. Maybe you should think about AMERICA more.

The auxiliary water pump on my car broke (the plastic rotted and cracked so it was spewing coolant everywhere) and the mechanic wanted me to pay $300 for a $150 part.

I went to an auto store and bought the part for just under $150 and was gonna have the mechanic install it until I called them back and they said they don’t install customer parts.

So I figured if they won’t install customer parts, they’ll at least fix existing problems with the vehicle.

So, naturally I poorly installed the new part myself, then took it to the mechanic saying I had coolant issues and wasn’t sure what the problem was. They fixed the problem in under 20 minutes and only charged me $30 for the labor.

Imma try that last one

I went to my doctor’s office and asked if they had any slots open for that day.  They told me they don’t take walk-ins, you have to call ahead for an appointment.

So I pulled out my phone and called the office.  The other receptionist answered the phone and the first one literally WATCHED ME say “I’d like to make an appointment today if you have any slots available.”

He said to me (on the phone) all they had available was for 9:00, could I make it in time?

I said “Yep, I’m standing right here.”

He didn’t understand what I meant and happily put my appointment down.

I hung up and said to the original receptionist, “Hi, I have an appointment in five minutes.”

She (very angrily) entered me as arrived and gave me my forms.

Older women are so, so beautiful, and older trans women are no exception. Celebrate the beauty of our elders! Celebrate trans beauty!

I wanted to share some more of these, specifically trans women of color. The images I'm posting are from a project called To Survive On This Shore and it's an interview project. I am only posting a handful so it's so worth checking out!

This is Linda, 60

Alexis, 64

Helena, 63

Kendrah, 72 (!!)

Tasha, 65

It was deeply healing to me to discover this project. The site has selected photos and attached interviews and it's definitely worth your time. I didn't include any because the focus of this post imo is transfems but there are a lot of beautiful interviews with transmasc people too if you're interested! But that'll have to be another post 💖

"The European materialist tradition of despiritualizing the universe is very similar to the mental process which goes into dehumanizing another person. And who seems most expert at de humanizing other people?
 [...]
"As soon as I become critical of Europe and its impact on other cultures, they (Caucasians) become defensive. They begin to defend themselves. But I’m not attacking them personally; I’m attacking Europe. In personalizing my observations on Europe they are personalizing European culture, identifying themselves with it. By defending themselves in this context, they are ultimately defending the death culture.
This is a confusion which must be overcome, and it must be overcome in a hurry. None of us have energy to waste in such false struggles. Caucasians have a more positive vision to offer humanity than European culture. I believe this. But in order to attain this vision it is necessary for Caucasians to step outside European culture—alongside the rest of humanity—to see Europe for what it is and what it does.
To cling to capitalism and Marxism and all the other “isms” is simply to remain within European culture. There is no avoiding this basic fact.
As a fact, this constitutes a choice. Understand that the choice is based on culture, not race. Understand that to choose European culture and industrialism is to choose to be my enemy. And understand that the choice is yours, not mine.

Liberals will say shit like "Yeah, well Trump would be doing so much worse right now" while Biden and the Democrats pull shit like this

Fuck you and your lesser-evilism. I refuse to do the math you want me to. The appropriate level of fascism is zero. If you don't believe that, line up with the fascists and follow your leader.

Additional context:

the Democrats are literally more gung-ho about this shit than the GOP is. They're not even the lesser of the fucking evils anymore! they're the ones fucking gunning for your civil liberties in this case!!

I'd appreciate if this post had. You know. At least one source. Other than Edward Snowden's Twitter.

Here's the exact CBS article from the screenshot immediately upthread of that person complaining the only source was twitter.

It was the first result after searching "CBS FISA", two key terms clearly visible in the screenshot. Published April 12, 2024.

Here's the memo image quote tweeted by Snowden, without the text replacement. Source is @/jordainc on Twitter, as the memo is not publicly published by the White House at this time. Tweet dated April 12, 2024.

For further reading, here is a White House publication from July 2023 where they describe an "investigation" into the effectiveness of Section 702, alongside their intent to reintroduce the bill with no added restrictions on surveillance capacities. Bolding in the quote added by me.

We agree with the unanimous conclusion reached by this group of independent, deeply experienced experts that failure to reauthorize Section 702 could be “one of the worst intelligence failures of our time.” We also agree with the Board’s recommendation that Section 702 should be reauthorized without new and operationally damaging restrictions on reviewing intelligence lawfully collected by the government and with measures that build on proven reforms to enhance compliance and oversight.

Supreme Court refuses to hear case that allows states to ban mass protest

You can’t protest in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Texas anymore. And there will be more states to follow in their example.

You know what time it is?

There are like ppl blaming looters and violet protestors as if those aren't legitimate acts to commit agaisnt a violent state that wants you dead and deprives you of basic needs.

there was another post I cant find at the moment that basically said "I feel like people forgot protesting is what we worked out as the alternative to beating people with sticks"

JK Rowling has used her billionaire legal team to silence a Jewish woman for telling the truth about her contempt for trans victims of the Holocaust.

Scotland’s network of “freedom of speech” organisations, as per usual, have nothing to say about the use of wealth to gag critics of the wealthy.

However fast they race to condemn the LGBT+ community for saying the names of those who harm us. Statements at the ready to insist that transphobes no one wants to work with anymore must be given every possible opportunity to gain from their bigotry.

But it's not the billionaires who are being silenced, as our media breathlessly echo their every hateful proclamation.

It's journalists and activists forced to publicly humiliate themselves under the weight and the threat of billionaire legal teams or be driven into destitution.

We deserve better. Freedom of speech needs to mean something

The Streisand Effect strikes

This will swiftly become one of the primary things JK Rowling is remembered for. Trying to erase crimes of the Holocaust against trans people and then silencing Jewish journalists for calling her out.

With your help we can make sure JK Rowling is known as a Holocaust denier first, author of mediocre children's books second

Today, people in Oakland, California, Eugene, Oregon, and Chicago, Illinois have blocked major highways. Demonstrators in Minnesota blockaded an Amazon facility. Others from Canada to Australia have shut down ports and other infrastructure.

These courageous actions in solidarity with Palestinians are just one step towards stopping the genocide in Gaza, where the Israeli military has slaughtered over 34,000 people, the majority of whom are women and children.

It's up to us to create a world without colonial violence of any kind.

the stuff going on at columbia campus rn is genuinely incredible

despite mass arrests by NYPD and several students (including rep ilhan omar’s daughter, isra hirsi) being suspended for their participation and having their university identification deactivated, the gaza solidarity encampment is still going strong well into its second day. def recommend following independent reporter talia jane who is taking part and providing live updates. (talia was the first reporter to break aaron bushnell’s self immolation in february; she was one of the reporters he contacted personally prior to the protest.)

thank you so much alexa @shivsblunt for mentioning it…..anyone who wants to contribute to their jail support fund can do so @ bcabolitioncollective on v*nmo. also, if anyone is in the area and available to join (via cssw4palestine on ig):

As a Columbia student of color who was there when the riot police made their arrests, today was literally terrifying. We are still out here on the lawns staying strong. Many of my friends were intimidated and jailed. Please follow Columbia’s SJP on Instagram and our CU Apartheid Divest, as there is a petition that we are trying to spread for signatures! If you want to help with legal fees, please follow the BC Abolition Collective! The fact that we have reached Tumblr and are gaining traction is absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for all of the support and much love!
