The filmmakers originally intended to portray the assembly of Rebels present for the ceremony using a matte painting. However, this proved too difficult, and the scene was filmed by moving the extras to different positions in the frame until the illusion of an large assembly was achieved.

Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton begin shooting gangster film!
A new film starring two scruffy men with a mean hat game has begun shooting in the US.
Professional outlaw Johnny Depp stars as gangster James “Whitey” Bulger and Aussie Joel Edgerton is playing FBI agent John Connolly. Benedict Cumberbatch is Whitey’s brother Billy and Sienna Miller plays his lover Catherine.
Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) is directing the as-yet-untitled film, which is based on the true crime book Black Mass. Principal photography began in Boston, where the story is set, this week.
Set in the 1970s, the drama tells the story of the alliance between Irish mobster Bulger and the FBI who collaborated to bring down their common enemy - the Italian mafia. Things soon spiral out of control though, and Whitey becomes one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
