Explore Earth - Tip #24:

Most spacer tourists, even from Mars, have some trouble getting used to Earth's gravity. Humanity did originate in that environment, though, so physical adaptation is often not too difficult for anyone who had appropriate growth assistance in childhood. The real difficulty is cultural! Anyone who watches Earth movies is probably familiar with cups, and has probably wondered, at least once, how on Earth (pardon the pun) anyone manages to drink from them. Don't worry! In major cities, almost every restaurant will offer bagged drinks for tourists, and, failing that, straws are a good second-choice. However, it's not impossible to learn how to drink from a cup, and even to become as proficient as a lifetime user! The key is taking it slowly. Because liquids tend to settle in high-gee, it can be easy to feel suffocated if you lift the cup too high. The key is in precise positioning of the cup's translation and rotation, in order to control the flow rate. If it sounds like propulsion engineering, you're not far off! Earthers find it second nature, a testament to the force of habit and practice. So, next time you're down the well, be brave, and try asking for a cup with your drink!
