[M KWAVE] B.A.P Talks About Memorable Concerts, Time Capsules, Love For Fans, And More

B.A.P recently participated in a pictorial for the 52nd issue of M KWAVE magazine.

During the photo shoot, in order to emphasize B.A.P’s transparent and clean charms, the group used glittering and see-through props to showcase a dreamlike atmosphere.

Although this type of image was different to one they usually displayed, B.A.P were true veteran idols as they were able to complete the photo shoot without trouble, while also showing their professional side.

When asked about when they felt they shined the most, the members gave their individual answers. Jongup thought it was when he smoothly lathered on lotion, while Daehyun stated it was when he was in a concert venue. Zelo answered it was when he felt free while performing, Yongguk felt it was when he was in his music studio alone while everyone else was asleep, and Himchan and Youngjae both replied it was when they were on stage.

The interviewer then asked B.A.P how they felt about ending their Taiwan, Bangkok, and Seoul concerts. They answered, “It was because our fans were by our side that we were able to end the concerts successfully. Being with our fans is always thrilling.” Zelo then remarked, “I wanted to see the fans so much. I was supposed to wear a cast on my elbow, but I wanted to go on stage so bad that I just chose to get a surgery instead. I worried a lot because I thought the recovery process would take too long, but I was happy because thankfully I was able to go on stage fully recovered.”

With over 100 concerts to their name, “global concert-idols” B.A.P revealed that each show was so precious to them that they remembered every single one. From all those shows, B.A.P were asked which concerts they remembered the most. They answered, “Our first debut showcase, first solo concert, and first world tour are memorable. Wouldn’t anyone’s first times be the most memorable?”

They continued, “Our recent Seoul concert was memorable. We felt satisfied at seeing our matured and more developed image on stage. If you see the fans reacting to that, you feel happy enough to get goosebumps.”

Later, the interviewer asked what items they would put in a time capsule if they could open it 10 years’ time. Zelo thought of becoming a cooler artist in the future, as well as the fans he’d continue to love, so he replied, “I want to put a single note in a bottle. It’d say, ‘I told you to wait ^^’.” Youngjae answered, “I want to include a video that tracks B.A.P’s promoting period. The times I spent with fans are all precious memories I want to remember for the rest of my life.”

B.A.P’s love for fans could be felt throughout the entire interview. When asked if there was anything they wanted to say to fans, they stated ,”[The hashtag] Be happy. Thank you for creating such great memories, and please watch over us from now on. We were happy until now, and let’s continue being happy.” They continued to thank fans, saying that while believing in them, the members could rely on them. The members finally expressed that although they weren’t able to do much yet, they’d do better in the future.

Finally, as the interview came to a close, they gave another statement to their fans by saying, “B.A.P was created because a group of people who love music and love performing joined together, but if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have been able to come this far together. We were able to become special people thanks to you, and we’re living happy lives. We will return [that love] to you slowly. Thank you, and we love you.”

B.A.P Debut Story

Yongguk

“I was born in a hospital in Incheon on March 31st, 1990. I’m the youngest out of two sons and one daughter in our family. My brother and I are twins.”

“I learned how to speak really late. I couldn’t speak till I was 5 so my family thought I was mute.”

“In kindergarten , I received a lot of awards in competitions like children’s arts or math competitions. My older brother always placed 1st and I was always 2nd though.”

“I used to really like sports when I entered elementary school. I liked all types of sports. In third grade, I was recommended by my coach to sign up for little league baseball since I liked sports and in 6th grade, I started soccer but because I caught the eyes of a recruiter from a different elementary, I even went to practice at a different soccer team in another school. Also, I entered a basketball team without my parents knowing, in which I even advanced to the National Sports Festival. Back then, the anticipation of my surroundings were high and some even believed I’d become an amazing athlete. However, I wasn’t able to achieve that due to my parents being against it.”

“Because both of my parents were working in Seoul to provide income for our family, I spent majority of my adolescent days at my grandfather’s house. Even for school arts festivals, my parents never came and at the time, I was upset since I was younger but my grandmother always did.”

When he entered junior high, Yongguk rejoined his parents living in Seoul.

“I started gaining interest in music from junior high and on. One day, I just thought how hip hop music seemed cool. It was also because my older sister liked American music so when I’d turn on the computer in our house, there were only songs in that genre. Because of that, I naturally began listening to hip hop music and gained interest, which led me to start looking for related videos myself.”

“I think after seeing videos with rapping in it, I realized then for the first time that I wanted to rap myself.”

“In my second year of junior high I wrote lyrics for the first time. After composing lyrics, coincidentally I found an online forum that comprised of people who were interested in hip hop and rap just like me and it was a whole new world. I posted my lyrics for the first time on an online forum and the responses were really good. At the time, I saw lots of responses like, “Your rap is unique” and “It’s refreshing.” How did I feel? Of course I felt so happy that I felt like I was going to fly. Many people listened to my music and I even received a question that asked, “Do you live outside of the country?” I think my motive back then was to not be swayed by the trend and prove “I only do my kind of music” to others.”

In high school, Bang Yongguk was really a quiet student. Despite moving onto the same high school as his friends that he was with in his junior high years, he was known to be the kid who never really talked.

“I didn’t really talk in high school and I would just go to school and come back home to do music:  that was all I did.”

In his second year of high school, Bang Yongguk started meeting up with his hyungs (who are label-mates with him currently) that were promoting at the time and began studying on composing. He said he started gaining more knowledge about music from professionals who were around this time. “In meeting up with the hyungs of our label back then, I composed by myself. My spectrum in music began expanding and seeing them produce music, I learnt a lot from it. Even when writing lyrics, I used to just write what came to mind before but, then, I think I started thinking a little more before jotting down lyrics.”

However, Bang Yongguk’s parents were very against him doing music.

“Because my parents didn’t like me doing music, I even rebelled for the first time. I used to sneak out to produce music alone. The storage room we had, I remodeled it into a producing room and I used to stay there. That was the place where the life of rapper Bang Yongguk began.”

However, the bigger his dreams got, his parents’ disapproval grew stronger as well, but both parties eventually found a compromise:

“My parents told me, “Be studious first and then do what you like,” so I opened my eyes to studying as well. Having them tell me that they wouldn’t say anything afterwards once I would achieve something first, I went to the library by myself and began studying. My test scores? I eventually ranked first in the entire school. Even after that, I maintained my status in our school’s top rankings (smiles).”

With him being motivated to focus on his studies so that he would be able to make music in the future, he earned a scholarship, of course, but was also offered a job in a major corporation that is one of the top nationwide.

“I received an excellence award in studies for the first time in my entire life and received a scholarship as well. Once I graduated high school, I was even offered a job in the S Corporation (Samsung). However, I wasn’t interested in any of those and I only had one thing in mind which was music.”

“I showed my parents my all in terms of being studious and it was my turn to do what I wanted which was to pursue in music. Eventually, I was able to convince my mother and she began to have an optimistic outlook on me pursuing music as well.”

“When I was 20, all I had to me was music really. When I promoted underground, I promoted with a quite popular crew and we released a compilation album, even so as to holding a nationwide tour and I stood on stage without any worries.”

However, Bang Yongguk never knew what satisfaction was. He even left the crew for the purpose of finding his own color in music and was on the constant search for finding his own kind of music.

“Even when I was a part of the crew, I still had dreams of going through my own challenges and when I left the crew, I still did music by myself underground. It was a difficult period of time in my life but with music, I was able to hold strong.”

With him being stubborn about music constantly, the opportunity of a major debut was given to him by fate.

“In 2010, the Untouchable hyungs that I’ve always known and was close with told a representative of our current label about me and when I was contacted by them for the first time, they said they wanted to make a hip hop idol group. I was shocked in hearing the term “idol.” “I hesitated a lot at the time and I thought that if I was classified under an idol group, it would mean that the spectrum of music I was able to put out was limited. However, they told me, “If you come into this group, you’ll be able to live out your dreams” and that’s how they convinced me. After hearing about the members, I thought, “If I just work harder, it can be a good group.” So I told them I’d do it.”

And that was how Yongguk took his first step into the TS Entertainment company.

Himchan

“I was born at 11AM on April 19, 1990 in a hospital in Seoul. I’m the youngest of 1 son and 1 daughter in our family and I’ve always had a big interest in music since I was younger. My older sister was a big influence as she attended a piano academy when she was younger, so we had a piano in our house. What I still remember from when I was younger was that I’d be able to play exactly the songs I’d learn from kindergarten on the piano. In seeing that, my mother thought I was a musical genius.”

Himchan attended a piano academy starting at the age of 5 with the light inspiration of wanting to play piano with his older sister and that was when he began to enjoy music.   Afterwards, he entered elementary school where he continued to study music but he pushed aside piano in which he started since he was younger in order to begin learning violin.

“Since first grade, I learnt violin for six years with the influence of my friends. Even then I was a goofball that always joked around haha. Because of that, I’d get in a lot of trouble from my teacher but I think I was able to make memorable memories. I think this was when I was also interested in studying something else besides music for the first time as I had fun learning math and debate.”

“I lived a very different lifestyle in high school than I did in junior high. I was one of the seventeen males out of the total which was 150 students. There were only three guys in our class. I think my feminine side became stronger during that period of time. All the males began subtly changing.”

During this time, Himchan put a lot of effort into his looks. He did have a reason considering the students in his surroundings were all females. And it was during this period of time in his life where Himchan received an offer from an entertainment company.

“In my first year of high school, I received a casting offer from an entertainment company that people will know just by hearing the name. In my second year of high school, they even offered to sign a contract with me and later in my third year of high school, I was casted on the streets by the nation’s greatest entertainment company, but I rejected them all. It all happened when I had already made up my mind to enroll into a university to study music more.”

And with Himchan hitting his third year in high school, he began to think about his future. Seeing how much his parents suffered for him, he survived off 2-3 hours of sleep every day in order to keep practicing and was able to taste victory when he was accepted to the Korea National University of the Arts.

“At the time, the acceptance for Korea National University of the Arts was 100% based off of skill and with fate being on my side, I was accepted (laughs). Everyone says I stepped foot into an elite course but for me, I just thought of it as a reward for all the effort I put in to be accepted into that school rather than considering myself as an elite.”

In his first year in college, Himchan ended up being casted by an entertainment company that specialized for actors and started playing a series of minor roles.

“I think I spent my time actively while I was a minor actor partaking in ads and even appeared in a cell phone CF featuring celebrities like seniors T-Ara and Yoon Siyoon. Of course, you can’t see my face though (laughs). Also in 2011, I appeared in the music video for senior Jung Seulgi. I was even a protagonist for an independent film.”

“In 2011, with the recommendation of TS Entertainment’s current recruiter for actors and in seeing the family-like atmosphere alongside meeting the CEO, I decided to sign with them right away and became thus a trainee . I don’t think I’ll come to regret this decision and I find it fate (laughs).”

However, Himchan wasn’t skilled in dancing or singing from the start. Himchan having only played gukak [T/N: Traditional Korean drum with two sides], dancing or singing was very new to him.

“All I remember is that I would get in trouble because I couldn’t sing or dance. Because I only played instruments, it was hard to maneuver my body. I knew that practice was the only road to save myself so I practiced endlessly and there were about 30 peers who were practicing to become a member of B.A.P. It was indeed an intense survival game in which I survived.”

Despite the rigorous competition, what was a big strength to him was same-aged leader Bang Yongguk who as an underground rapper was also experiencing at that time a lot of hardships in dancing.

“At first, Yongguk and I lived in a dorm together and I thought that was the most fun. I was able to tell Yongguk openly about all my troubles (laughs). Yongguk? He’s a friend who has upright values and in meeting Yongguk, I think I changed a lot too.”

Bang Yongguk and Himchan, the two depended on one another and began overcoming the obstacle of their trainee years. Of course, there were many times when they wanted to give up but all of a sudden, the two same-aged friends became the two dependable eldest members of B.A.P.

“My dream? Invading the universe haha. Also, I want to be able to be with the members of B.A.P for a long time. Of course, with our fans too (laughs). With how much obstacles I’ve faced to make a debut, I want to promote just as hard and I’ll continue to become a Himchan who never loses his roots.”

Daehyun

“I heard a few compliments saying that I was good at singing since I was in elementary school. I used to just admire singers perform inside my television when I was in elementary school but when I moved onto middle school, I think all I did was go to karaoke places. When I was bored, I’d just sit alone and sing (laughs). It wasn’t just karaoke places. I went to various places like parks or fields, wherever I could sing, I’d sing my heart out. And in my third year of middle school came puberty and I couldn’t sing for a while. Despite being at a young age, I did bottle my sufferings alone.”

“In my second year of high school, Someone saw me practicing and asked if I was interested in joining a youth club, so it was a time where we uploaded practice videos on the internet. At the time, I had friends who did bboying so I learned dancing too.”

With one of his friends seeing the amount of efforts he put in, he asked him if he’d like to go to an academy with him and that was then, at this time when Daehyun met his teacher who will become his life mentor, stacking his skills slowly, one by one.

“Our academy teacher poured everything of his for me, giving his all. It was my first time being anticipated by someone so to return that anticipation, I did my best. With the mindset of working hard till death, I even cut off my cell phone plan to keep on practicing and stayed at the academy practicing till they closed. For about a year, I was crazy for singing and dancing.”

There’s the saying that even compliments make dolphins dance and thus the more compliments Daehyun heard from those around him, while receiving official music lessons, the more his singing skills improved day by day.

Soon enough, his efforts met its result as he successfully finished his first solo stage at the concert that his academy held.

“Our academy held a recital and that was the first time I performed in front of my parents. With the thought of performing for my parents, I practiced to the point of having vocal nodules. Fatefully I was able to have a solo stage and I saw my mother in the audience. I cried then and so did my mother. When I got off the stage, I cried again in seeing my teacher’s face. It was my first time being on such a big stage and the song I happened to sing then was “A Dream of a Goose. I couldn’t hold back the tears in thinking of the effort I put in all that time.”

With Daehyun stacking his skills to a higher level slowly, a fateful opportunity approached him and that was when he found out that his current company, TS Entertainment, was holding auditions in Busan.

“When I heard the news of TS Entertainment holding auditions in Busan, at the same time I had another opportunity to stand on a different stage to perform. I gave up the auditions to stand on that stage in which I placed second. After the performance, I got a phone call from TS Entertainment to know if I was interested in the auditions still.”

Daehyun, who had wanted to try a diverse range of music, continued to reject the offers of auditioning but when he began to think about his future, he eventually came up to Seoul.

“I went to go audition and I didn’t even know how to take the subway. With much difficulty, I was finally able to arrive at the company and take my auditions. However, the response was very cold and even I, thought I did horrible at the auditions. I thought, “If they smile, then that means you passed,” so I brushed it off when I was going back down to Busan.”

However, his luck didn’t end there as he received news of qualifying when he was on the train heading back to Busan.

“I boarded the train to go back to Busan and I got a phone call from my teacher. I doubted it, but it was none other than the phone call telling me that I passed. My teacher was a parental figure to me and I cried in seeing him happier than anyone else would be. As soon as I went back home, I hugged my teacher and shared my happiness with him.”

“I was sad to part with someone I liked and in seeing my teacher’s face again, I cried. All I could tell him was to wait a little longer in that I’ll return the favor to him. It was heartbreaking in having to leave my peers behind, who had the same dreams as I did.”

And Daehyun trained for roughly six months before he made his debut with B.A.P. Although his trainee days were short, his skills were acknowledged and earned the title of the team’s powerful vocalist.

Youngjae

“I was born in a hospital in Bangbaedong of Seoul on January 24th, 1994 and have an older brother with the age gap of eight years.”

“When I was younger, my mother ran an apparel business but with the IMF, our family’s situation wasn’t at its best, even going into the extent of us living inside a container home from the factory of my uncle’s construction company. I never felt inconvenience, although my mother and older brother did. It was a rough time in my life but I always tried to think optimistically and I worked harder then.”

Due to financial issues, Youngjae had to live with his mother while his father moved away and the time Youngjae was alone increased. During that period of time, his friend was none other than computer games.

“In 6th grade, my dream was to become a pro-gamer. I liked Starcraft so much that I fell into the game every day. In 2002, I was playing that game despite it being the year of the World Cup.”

Youngjae’s dream of becoming a professional gamer when he was younger drastically changed when he went on a school trip in his second year of junior high.

“In my second year of junior high, our class went on a trip and I had the opportunity to stand on stage for the talent show. Then, I sang a song from SG Wannabe with my friends and our peers cheered for us lots. In hearing the claps from my peers, I felt really good. It made me think, “The stage is a nice place” (Laughs). Although we placed third, the cries for an encore were only for me.”

Maybe it was because he couldn’t forget the exhilaration he felt from the stage, but he lost the excitement he felt for playing games soon afterwards and poured his focus into studying music in having a dream of becoming a singer instead.

In his first year of high school, Youngjae began going to a lot of auditions. Many entertainment companies that one can recognize just by the name recognized Youngjae’s talents and had recruited him, and even received an offer from a male idol group who is promoting actively today. However, after much dilemma, Youngjae entered JYP Entertainment as a trainee and officially prepared for a debut, his age being 17 at the time.

“I joined as a JYP trainee in the end of my first year in high school and spent a year since then just training. However, due to personal reasons, I left JYP and I think the mindset of wanting to do music became stronger. In putting behind me everyone’s disappointment, I made this decision.”

With having time to relax his body and heart for a while, a person he knew introduced him to his current company, TS Entertainment.

“There were a lot groups that were supposed to make a debut in TS Entertainment at the time. Of course, I knew Yongguk hyung was promoting at the time too and I auditioned during my time off, receiving a phone call from TS Entertainment soon afterwards. My mother was against me becoming a trainee for this company but as time passed by, she began to recommend me to take the offer in seeing the family-oriented atmosphere that drew her in (laughs).”

However, Youngjae signing with the company and becoming a member of B.A.P tied back down to leader Bang Yongguk’s unknown strength playing a big role of it all.

“When I came here, I saw Yongguk hyung practicing and he was so good. I think I worked harder with the thought of, “If I’m in a team with that hyung, I feel like I can achieve something”.”

“I think all six members of B.A.P have a bigger desire to being recognized for the occupation of being a singer rather than to gain popularity for being a singer, so that’s why our friendship is even greater.”

Jong Up

“I was born in Siheung of Kyungkido on February 6th, 1995. I am the youngest out of three sons.”

In his elementary school days, Jongup was a popular kid, his personality of being able to get along with others being one factor but his mother being another one as well.

“Since first grade, my mother started up a restaurant and at first, I complained because I couldn’t adjust to a room where there was no one. Later on however, I knew my mother was sacrificing for me so I would help out with dish washing at her restaurant. On days off, she would make hot cakes or other delicious foods (since she had a chefs license) and that’s how I was popular amongst my peers.”

Jongup who enjoyed playing with his friends opened his eyes to a whole new world when he moved onto middle school, officially taking an interest in dancing.

“I did extracurricular activities in my first year of middle school and joined cross-stitching with my friends and I don’t really know why I did choose cross-stitching then haha. Finding out that there was a club for dance was later on and after following my friend to the dance club all the time, I ended up joining as well.”

Jongup fell for the charms of bboying when he saw his seniors in the dance club practicing.

“Seeing the seniors dance, it made me think of how I wanted to try it for myself and since then, I literally only practiced. It was to the point where I’d go practice during school vacations. Around the end of my first year in middle school was when I began going to bboy competitions.”

“My third year of middle school was the time when I entered the most dancing competitions. After placing 2nd in an open competition, I entered another one but still placed 2nd unfortunately.”

However, Jongup’s life changed completely with this competition and it was because this was the time when his current company had scouted him in recognizing his skills.

“I met the person who was in charge of recruiting for the first time at this competition. In my first year of high school, I got a phone call to audition for them and I didn’t have anything prepared necessarily so I danced to Usher’s song that I did for the qualification exam for my high school. What did I feel at the time? I thought I was disqualified for sure. The person who was judging my auditions had a serious face (laughs). I was going home in almost having gave up but I got a call of them telling me, “It’s hard preparing to become an idol but do you think you can do it ?” I shouted “Yes” of course haha.”

By the month of August of his first year in high school, Jongup officially became a trainee under TS Entertainment.

However, Jongup couldn’t do much as soon as he became a trainee and the reason was because at the time, the group B.A.P was still being sketched out which heightened his fear for the future.

“In my trainee days, I did train but there were more times where I did nothing. That period of time was the most difficult for me and I used to fear that I’d spend my trainee days and it’d just end. However, after starting it up a little with the other trainee hyungs, I started finding hope again.”

It was also during this time when Jongup had a role model who helped his desires of becoming a singer grow even more.

“I really like an American artist by the name of Chris Brown and he made me want to become a singer. Before finding out who he was, I was uncertain about being a singer for an occupation but seeing him solidified what I wanted to accomplish and as the result, I am now promoting as a member of B.A.P (laughs).”

“Although I’m scared often, I feel that I’m able to show a lot of different sides to myself on stage and in a way, it makes me think that I’m fit for being on stage. Also, we have dependable figures that are fans from whom we keep receiving an abundant amount of love so I wish to return the favor and will work hard in order not to disappoint them.”

Zelo

My real name is Choi Junhong. I was born in Mokpo of Jeonranam on October 15th, 1996 and I am the younger of two sons.”

“In entering elementary school, becoming a soccer player was my dream. I only remember playing soccer every day and when I was in fifth grade, it was to the point where I was scouted to join the youth soccer team of our district. However, with the disapproval of my parents, I had no choice to throw aside my dreams of becoming a soccer player.”

With his parents disapproving his dreams of becoming a soccer player, Zelo tried rebelling like none other. Although it was a decision made by his parents for the good will of his future, Zelo was still shocked at such a young age. But soon enough, Zelo began recognizing the charms of something else.

“I used to listen to songs with my MP3 player and having grown tired of soccer, all I could think about was the choreographies of senior idols on television one day. Since then, I’d copy their dancing and practice in detail. When I was at home, I’d practice in front of the mirror alone in doing things like beat boxing as well.”

And in spending his days, it was the year when Zelo was in 5th grade that through an acquaintance that recognized his talent, he was introduced to an academy located in Gwangju. It’s also well-known because Seungri of Big Bang had attended the same academy.

“In the end of 5th grade, I was introduced to the academy that senior Seungri attended in Gwangju and I was criticized a lot for my fashion sense at first. At the time, I wore pants that were three-quarters in length and dyed my hair blue in the front and when the directors of the academy saw me, they told me, “If you don’t change your fashion sense, then we’re not accepting you.” Since then, I wore skinny jeans and started growing interested in fashion.”

“I think a lot of people around me didn’t expect me to succeed and especially the label of being “the country kid from Mokpo” became a scar to me and I started changing my mindset. I was driven to focus on each and every area, from my appearance to fashion and music as well.”

Zelo’s capability was beyond what one imagined and earned the title of being the student to learn the fastest and to apply the skills the fastest out of the students in the academy. His fashion sense also garnered attention and he rose as one of the greatest fashionable people of Gwangju.

“On Christmas, I remember seeing seniors Dynamic Duo at a performance in Gwangju and I even stood as a guest for their performance. I remember singing the song ‘Solo’ then and I remember asking for them to ‘raise me’ (in becoming a singer) but they said it would be difficult because they were enlisted at the time (laughs). It’s an unforgettable memory.”

As Zelo raised his dancing and singing skills in Gwangju, it was until he caught the eye of a representative of an entertainment company that he moved to Seoul after being casted.

“I ended up moving to Seoul when I began a trainee life for a certain entertainment company. Of course, I had fears of my fellow peers in Seoul and due to my height – almost nearing 180cm – I was picked on a lot. I acted confident on the outside but on the inside, I was a bit scared (laughs). However, I soon adjusted into the lifestyle and had fun in school.”

However, his debut was pushed back a little due to the state the company was currently in and instead, he was able to stand on a stage for a musical as he got a taste of a whole new world.

“In my third year of middle school, for a semester I performed on a teenage musical stage for about a month. I learned then on how to interact with the audience and because of the state the company was in at the time, I ended up leaving and took a break for a few weeks afterwards (laughs).”

His break didn’t last long however, as a representative of his current company had noticed his skills in leading him to another trainee life.

“The first person I saw at the company was Yongguk hyung. In seeing his skills, it made me think, “I can’t fall behind him.” I was driven to do better than Yongguk hyung and that thought hasn’t changed since (laughs). I had a lot to learn as well and in living with him, it made me think that I’ll never falter while being at his sides.”
