The information in that video is not entirely true. Humans have only captured juveniles, that part is true, but it means that we’ve only physically caught juveniles and studied them more in-depth as a result, but those sightings would be of adults. It’s why they’re named after their big fins and not their huge t-posing arms, those of younger ones don’t stand out like that. The one in that video (and in some other videos and photos that you can find around online) is extremely unlikely to be anything but an adult. It’s technically not fully confirmed that those and the juveniles are actually the same species because you cann’t be that sure when you don’t have anything from the big ones to compare to the small ones besides a handful of images. But if they’re not the same, they’d just most likely be very close to the species they’re currently classified as. And, regardless of that, we can still be pretty sure they’re adults. We really don’t know much about them, but that’s common for a lot of species, including some that we think of as “more normal”, especially in the ocean. We may still learn a lot about them, and i hope we do.

That said, i think they’re fascinating, but if i saw one of those in real life i might still just die instantly because my brain would not know how to deal with seeing that.

as pointed out to me by @mizrashkiphardi, the now popular sea shanty ‘Wellerman’ is based on the Weller brothers who were Pākeha (European) colonizers and whale-hunters in Aotearoa New Zealand in the 1800s.

They kept Māori people, my people, as hostages, and traded preserved Māori heads (which are considered sacred to my people). They “bought” land off Māori people (which always was 100% legal and consensual, totally /s). They contributed to the colonization, genocide, and harm of indigenous land and indigenous people.

this song should not be sung, it should not be shared.

most people probably don’t know the meaning of the song, or who it’s about, but it should not be spread. their names should not be spread, sung about, or celebrated.
