Pt. 2 Arriving at campus
Nadine takes a moment to adjust to the new environment. What is it about new unfamiliar surroundings that makes her feel so uncomfortable? She’s nervous to the point of feeling queasy. It’s as if she was 15 again and this was the first day of junior high. She’s overwhelmed by the fact that she actually got accepted to this school but she hates having to start a week later than everyone else. She’s afraid everybody will already be all settled in and know each other and their way around campus. And she’ll just be the lost-looking new girl.
All weekend she’s been trying to mentally prepare for this day. And dwelling on what to wear. To draw as little attention to her as possible she has decided on something discrete, just a plain white t-shirt and her favourite flared jeans.
Observing her new surroundings she notices how everyone already seems so in place. A group of friends joking around like they’ve known each other for weeks. There’s a girl with her hair dyed half purple half white who stands out in the crowd of students walking to class. Nadine doesn’t realise that she’s just standing there, staring at them. Suddenly the girl looks up and their eyes meet. “Shit” Nadine unintentionally says out loud. She’s immediately embarrassed and mumbles to herself “I must seem like an awkward creep”.
Where was it she was suppose to be? She takes out a piece of paper with all the info from her bag. Meanwhile the girl with the two-toned hair has left her entourage and is suddenly standing right in font of Nadine.
“Are you lost?” she asks bluntly.
“Uh, well yeah, I’m not sure where I’m going”.
The girl grabs the paper from Nadine’s hands.
“You’re in my class. Come on!” she says, gesturing her to follow along.
“I’m Maya”.
