Unique vintage male names, companion to this post:

There are less of them because people seemed to be less creative with naming their sons. Not sure why.

what people who didn't grow up by the sea don't realise is that death at sea isn't a threat it's a part of life that you have to and will come to terms with. you can play it as safe as you like but at the end of the day if you choose to stay close to the coast you are entering a contract with the sea that she can demand you honour the terms of at any time. there's a reason so many old gods and eldritch horrors are ocean based. that's literally just what it's like. "i never thought the primordial forces of nature would eat MY face" skill issue.

If you're in the need for some kind of magical artifact of magic for your setting, consider Fresnel Lenses which are used in lighthouses:

These things are Alive.

Fun fact:

They used to float (and some still do) on a bed of MERCURY.

It's a means of reducing friction during rotation, and one of the lighthouse keepers' jobs used to be cleaning and straining impurities from the mercury.

So yeah that probably did contribute to erratic behavior more than a few times.

There was a lighthouse near my grandparents my family would visit. It also makes for a good equivalent to a steampunk wizard's tower. The wizard might not be in the tower itself, but the grounds certainly had room for everything a wizard might want.

I'm always criticizing eurocentric fantasy worldbuilding, but one thing I think it's underused are city-states and trade republics and leagues. Not that they don't exist, but they're often in the background, the fantasy genre is so focused on monarchies and dynasties and noble drama, while those systems have so much room for intrigue and stuff without getting into "who's the TRUE heir of the super magical monarch" (yes, I know they had aristocratic families that ruled almost as monarchs, but trust me, Medici drama is another beast from regular feudal stuff)

Venice with its stupidly complex election system and their eternal rivals in Genoa, Florence home of the Rennaissance, the Hanseatic League, and lesser known examples like Novgorod, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Taifa of Córdoba, the Consolat de Mar (technically not a republic but kind of an Iberian Hansa) and if we go farther back, the leagues of city states of antiquity... you know what, I'm bored of feudalism. Next time I do a fantasy setting, it will all be city states and republics. Fuck feudalism.

you cannot divorce lewis’ writing from his christian morality and worldview. you just can't. i'm sorry to everyone who's been duped by this “narnia is just a fantasy story and i can interpret it any way i want” idea because that is just fundamentally untrue. if you don't read narnia through a christian lens you are unavoidably missing the thesis of the work. and you're making yourselves angry over something the author makes very transparent. just don't read it if you can't get with it.
