Only then does it dawn on the priest that perhaps Mary is not asking solely for dress code purposes, but maybe for… validation? He’s not well-versed in make-up artistry by any means ; but if there are FLAWS on the canvas of her skin, he certainly cannot notice them. “ But uh — you look just fine. Great, really. If that’s why you’re asking. ” He offers a smile, warm and reassuring to hopefully make up for his blundering responses. Still, the compulsion rises to break the awkward silence that follows with something. Anything. “ That reminds me : have you ever wondered why tomatoes are always blushing ?— ”

A   TWITCH   OF   DISCONTENTMENT   colours   the   lines   etching   her   visage,   the   scores   of   dark   purple   ranging   her   arms   and   legs   left   much   to   be   analyzed,   and   mary   can   only   peer   down   in   shame   as   the   man   begins   to   help   suture   her   wounds.      why   anyone   would   do   such   a   thing   is   beyond   her   own   reasoning,   the   voice   at   the   back   of   her   skull   screaming   to   pull   back   and   run   away.   she   should   not   be   a   burden   to   anyone.   still,   there’s   an   uncharted   warmth   about   him,   insisting   that   she   stay,   at   least   gratuitous.      ❝               yes   .   .   .   thank   you.   and   sorry.   .   .         ❞

i   feel   like   mary   would   befriend   joe   fast   and   check   on   him   often   because   he’s   just   a   real   person.   she   would   probably   feel   bad   that   the   other   islanders   judge   him,   even   if   she   knew   the   full   story   of   what   happened   with   leeza.   she   would   definitely   take   up   for   him   if   she   had   to.
