...The cadets learn that a salt packet is a component of the standard survival kit around their fourth year. But only when Hunter got offworld and took part in preparing the actual food, from meat and other components, not from the rations, did he discover the concept of adding salt to the food. And that there are not strict rules about how much salt you need to add. Moreover, even identical regs may prefer different amounts of salt in their cooked food.

Hunter pocketed some salt on that trip and later used it to prank his brothers. Slipping behind their backs, he was pouring random amounts of salt into someone's meal and then just sat, feigning innocence, while they were bickering about whether the food tasted weird today. When Hunter confessed his crimes eventually, Wrecker caught him in a headlock, and Crosshair kicked him hard. Tech confiscated the remaining pinch of salt, greyish with dirt by this point. Now it was Tech's turn to bother them for several days by adding salt to various foods in the mess hall and insisting on sharing their experience of how the taste of the food differed. And why was the balance of sodium ions supposed to have such an effect on the sensitivity of specialised taste buds, and so on…
