Incredibly annoying take as a palestinian academic because history and archeology is one of the primary ways israel enforces its colonialism. Read literally any Palestinian academic and they talk about this. Academia is not some separate branch from colonialism. They participated in the erasure of nakba documentation. Why do you think no one learns about the Nakba in Israel? Why do you think it's a predominate academic ideology in Israel that there is no such thing as the Palestinian people? Why do you think that "Arab colonialism" in the Levant is one of the main Israeli talking points these days? Archeology in itself is one such medium that israel disenfranchised Palestinians.

And what has Israeli academia been saying these past few months as Gazan colleges have been destroyed and professors have been murdered? What have they done? Israel literally stole artifacts and heritage from Gaza and put it in their own museum. There has been no international, let alone Israeli, outrage at this. To pretend that academics have no political or social influences in their society is only paving way to excuse academics' passivity and outright contribution to the colonization of Palestinian land.

But yeah, sure, we are picking on random individuals and not an entire system. This forced individualization of academia does not do anyone but zionists a favor. Academics participate in their institutions. They have sway over their institutions. If they want to do something, they can pressure their government to stop apartheid.

So, let me get this straight.

You can support Palestine, BUT:

You can't go against soldiers murdering palestinians, because they are poor widdle conscripts.

You can't go against civilians advocating for genocide, because they are brainwashed by the big bad politicians.

You can't go against academia giving the intelectual framework and technology for colonialism, because academics are always innocent servants of knowledge.

You can't even speak against institutions and the country in general because that makes you antisemitic.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????

I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

Saw a sharp increase in my follower count after posting this. The legitimacy of it is driving me nuts so I also feel the need to say that you can follow anyone on here regardless of whether you’ve interacted with them or not. People like the above mentioned blog are exceptions. Perhaps they themselves think they aren’t and therefore will act like they aren’t, but they are, trust me.

Just follow anyone you wanna follow. The worst thing that can happen is maybe getting soft-blocked by the other person, but if they do soft-block you, then they were never that worth following in the first place.

I think this is still the main approach to following people on this site and i think its mischaracterizing the people who want to limit the amount of followers they have to call them new users

i only know of 2 blogs that do try to discourage new followers both have been on this website for a very long time the one you're talking about here has had a popular blog on this website longer than ive been here and that has lead to them receiving significant harassment so when they made their new blog they put "i softblock new followers unless we have a rapport" in their blog description which is why its notable that the people following them "havent even had a conversation with them"
