Disclaimer: I don’t anything! Just a fan with some extra time on my hands. :)
Authors note: This my first drabble ever! So don’t expect much… Just a little idea that popped in my head. Inspired by/my take on the spoiler that “someone unexpected saves Klaus.
“You’re beautiful, you’re strong, you’re full of light. I enjoy you.” - Klaus
I never understood before
I never knew what love was for
My heart was broke my head was sore
What a feeling
Caught up in ancient history
I didn’t believe in destiny
I look up you’re standing next to me
What a feeling
What a feeling in my soul
Love burns brighter than sunshine
It’s brighter than sunshine
Let the rain fall I don’t care
I’m yours and suddenly you’re mine
Suddenly you’re mine
And it’s brighter than sunshine
Brighter than Sunshine by Aqualung
Caroline stalked through the forest. She didn’t know how long she had been walking, but she could still make out the persistent steps of a certain someone who did not know when to give up, following her. But then again, who was she to talk?
“Caroline, love! How long are we going to play this game?” His voice drifts between the trees ambiguously.
“Until you leave me alone!’” She screams, without looking back.
“Never going to happen.” Klaus yells back as if he has all the time in the world. Which technically, he does. She can just imagine his self assured smirk and she lets out a shriek of frustration.
“When will you get it through your thick skull that I’m not interested. I don’t want anything to do with you!”
Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, Caroline finds herself face to face with Klaus, so close his breath whispers on her lips. His hands circle around her upper arms, strong enough so she can’t escape but not enough to hurt her either. “When are you going to stop kidding yourself?” He stares intently into her eyes, letting the silence spread between them.
She avoids his question. “Look… I’m flattered and all. We had a few moments, they were nice, but that doesn’t change anything. You’re an original, I’m just a baby vampire from the middle of nowhere. You tried to kill me. You thought you killed my best friend. You killed her aunt. There can never be anything between us.”
He ignores her protests. “I have never claimed to be an angel. In fact, I’m probably proof they don’t exist. But if you really wanted to be rid of me, you would have let me die tonight. Instead, you risked everything that’s important to you, to save my life. There is something undeniable between us. And I know you feel it to, even if you won’t admit it to yourself. There is no shame in what lies between us.”
She turns her face away from him, not wanting to meet his eyes, trying to deny the truth of his words. His accent makes her stomach feel like it is doing flip flops, and his touch, even through the sleeves of her jacket, sends thrills of electricity up and down her skin. He brushes her hair away from her face, his fingers skimming her cheek and he leans in close, his voice tickling her ear. “Stop running Caroline. I could make you happier then your wildest dreams… If you let me.” It feels like torture, she is so tempted, every traitorous cell in her body tells her to give in. But she is not the same weak girl she was when she was human, she is a vampire, a strong, empowered woman who is not a slave to her hormones.
“I have lived a thousand years and no one has ever entranced me the way you do. But most of all, no one but you… Not even my family, has risked for me, and cared for me more when I have deserved it less, despite my… faults. I won’t forget it.” He smiles at her, and there is such a pure beauty and happiness in it, that she knows, despite her best efforts, she will not forget this moment for the rest of her undead life. No-one had ever looked at her like she was the reason the sun rose and set in the sky. She has never wanted to believe it more. His words, but most of all the promises in them, are so seductive she wants to forget everything he has ever done, forget all that obstacles that stand between them, and throw herself on him, and finally give him the chance to deliver all he offers. Instead, she meets his gave unwaveringly, defiantly.
“My heart belongs to Tyler.” She ignores the sneaky voice in the deepest, darkest parts of her heart. She will not go there.
“Does it now? Or are you just afraid of how I make you feel? Afraid to admit that you’ve changed your mind… that you don’t love him like you’re supposed to. Great risk comes with great reward darling. And I don’t take you as a coward.”
He is daring her, but she won’t take the bait. She hates that he might be right, even though she has never voiced her doubts. She hates that he thinks he knows her. “You don’t know anything about how I feel. Or about friendship, or loyalty for that matter. I could never love someone like you.” Something flicks behind his eyes, but it is gone in a second and he composes himself before he responds.
“Let go of this image of yourself you have built. You are destined for bigger things than Mystic Falls and Tyler Lockwood. You were destined to conquer the world. We could conquer it… Together.”
Klaus has the confidence and patience of a thousand years behind him. When he wants something, he does not give up and she knows nothing she says can change his mind. She can’t stand out in the forest with him arguing over why she saved him tonight. She doesn’t even know herself, and she is afraid if she dissects it more, she won’t like what she finds. “Let go of me.” Reluctantly, finger by finger, he releases her.
“We are not finished here.” He speaks with an assuredness that frightens and thrills her at the same time.
“You might not be, but I am.” She turns and starts walking off into the direction of her house. To her annoyance, he immediately comes beside her, matching her stride. “I’m perfectly capable of getting myself home.”
“I know, but I’ll walk you home anyway. I enjoy spending time with you. Even when you’re cross with me.” He grins at her, and before she catches herself, she smiles back. Immediately, she chides herself, she should not be encouraging him. She turns away from his all too knowing gaze, but not before rolling her eyes. “Stop looking at me like that.” This just causes him to grin even wider at her.
Monster. Murderer. The lines had once been so clear. Who is the real Klaus? She doesn’t know what to believe anymore, but she knows she cannot let herself be swayed by a few romantic words and gestures. She has to be strong enough. She can’t give in.
