Ironically, we serve fanart and not medicine

@applegelstore / applegelstore.tumblr.com

Sideblog for all my JRPG fangirling, and most importantly my fanart scribbles. Somehow 90% Tales of (Zestiria), but other interests of mine will have cameos. My main contributions to the fandom are pirate Rose and Death Metal Velvet. Personal main blog is toradh, so if somebody likes or follows you or leaves stupid comments, that’s me. I also have an artblog toradhart, but my fanart scribbles will be on this blog only to save normal people’s dashes. The art tag I use on this blog is, creatively, “applegelartstore” (you can always just follow that instead of the whole blog if that suits your needs). If there’s anything else you need me to tag, please let me know! I also do commissions, if anybody feels inclined, so feel free to approach me, and I’ll give you the details! You can also tip me on Ko-Fi if you’d like to support me! It’s much appreciated!

Started the colour wheel challenge on Twitter last month but only with pretty boys, lost all motivation halfway through and had too many other things on my plate to continue, yet somehow managed to complete it anyway, and with that I have fulfilled my fanart quota for the year. Unless I somehow manage to find time for a “ladies whom I want to step on me” version, but it’s more than just a little unlikely.

I will be open for commissions in May! If you’d like to secure a spot in advance, shoot me an email or use this form.

Looking forward to drawing your characters!

May commissions are open and the waitlist isn’t long! I also happily do pet portraits or chibi or simplified sketch comms for people on a budget.

I also have an INPRNT now if you’d rather buy a print than custom art!

Death as a Salvation in Zestiria

Good night, Heldalf. Your life of eternal solitude is at last over.

Zestiria, despite its medieval fantasy and Arthurian legend outward appearance, actually doesn’t hold back in its Japanese inspirations (among a lot of things, the devs have at least admitted that Sorey and Mikleo are inspired by the Japanese historical figure, Sakamoto Ryouma, and that seraphim are based on kami.)

Often overlooked, though, are its very obvious Buddhist inspirations, especially Japanese Buddhism, despite it supposedly being as apparent as the other inspirations. Perhaps viewing it through Buddhist lens would help some to understand arguably the most controversial message in Zestiria, that is, “death can be salvation.”

Zestiria and Shinto

I think it’s very understated that Zestiria takes a lot after Shinto (compared to say, how people keep bringing up its Arthurian inspirations, despite those inspirations being superficial relatively), especially when it’s the essence of the game itself, but I suppose it’s easy for it to go over people’s heads if they don’t truly understand Shinto itself, which to be fair is a concept that is not equivalent at all to the religions widely known in the modern West.
