@gendernewtral holy shit what??

an update to my insulin pump (a model which is highly recommended by doctors because it has software you can update, unlike other models) would allow my doctor to see more of my medical data because of the way my pump would now function.

i technically had the choice not to update it, but if i didn’t, my insurance company would not cover the cost of fixing or replacing it if something happened to it. they could say that the damage came from not updating the system, even if the damage was completely external.

some of the software updates have been beneficial, and have made my life easier. however, the choice to use these new system has always been made for me. i can’t afford to replace this $3000 device that allows me to live without injecting insulin upwards of five times a day.

disabled people already live in a world that is hypermanaged by people who have absolute control over our health and safety. anyone with a prosthetic, hearing aid, or pacemaker can face the same problem i did if the manufacturer decides they need to exert their presence in our lives more than they already do. the “cyberpunk dystopia” is already here, and if you want to change the ever-growing vice grip of “smart technology,” help disabled activists. we’ve been here all along.

(if you want a short primer on what it’s like to be disabled and rely on technology, read Jillian Weise’s personal essay in Alice Wong’s Disability Visibility).

it feels like a lot of "progressive" online spaces have really latched onto this ooo boykisser pastel stockings kitty femboy image of GNC men and i have to admit i have concerns about how those spaces would respond to GNC men who either can't or simply don't want to look like that

are these spaces kind and considerate to fat men in skirts? black men with nail polish and lipstick? GNC men with muscles and body hair? gay guys with long hair and beards? GNC trans men who don't want to be "cute"?

this is taking off a little so i'd like to note i deliberately picked these examples so they're not mutually exclusive - there are plenty of GNC black trans bears out there, and for a group of people so influential to gay culture through the drag and ballroom scenes, they feel very underrepresented in these online spaces

we have to start ridiculing climbing mount everest the way we've ridiculed diving to the titanic there's no reason to be dying up there why dont you do a nice normal sport

Shitty take. Diving to the Titanic shouldn’t be ridiculed either as long as you have proper safety measures in place, and on the submarine. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Okay. Have fun down there. Say hi to those other guys for us

In all seriousness though, Mount Everest is sacred to the Sherpa people who act as guides because of religious obligation, yet they have no official say over what is done with the mountain that has become covered in litter and corpses because of the tourism industry. These people repeatedly risk their lives because of the tourists and receive barely any recognition or respect for it, in fact just earlier this year a climber whose life was saved by his Sherpa guide blocked the guide on Instagram afterwards. We should absolutely be shaming people climbing Mount Everest.

Not to mention the economic exploitation that the Sherpa face from and as a result of tourists/tourism and the Nepalese government itself as a result. Their labor and very lives are consistently exploited to meet the demands of Nepal's focus on climbing and mountaineering dependent tourism.

The beautiful thing as you get older is that you realize so many “rules” are made up and you can just do whatever. Posters can go anywhere in the house not just my room. I can sit down while cooking a meal or taking a shower. I can make the same thing for breakfast lunch dinner for a week straight. I can roam around the house shirtless. I can wear a dress with jeans. The world is my oyster key word my and I can live as I please embracing little things such as this

Loving the new counterpoint that not only is posting activism, not posting is complicity. Why doesn't everyone with any fame or internet presence immediately release a lengthy but perfectly-worded statement telling us where they stand on every issue? Is it because they're evil??? It must be because they're evil

And then the usual answer is "they don't post online very much". Which is all very suspicious, don't they know everything of importance is done by posts on social media now

Okay I'm going to talk about this for the last time bc currently the stupidest manifestation of this I've ever seen is unfolding, and nothing can top it or explain this phenomenon better

So Amal Clooney was one of the lawyers who advised the ICC to charge Netanyahu with war crimes & issue an arrest warrant. But apparently there was already a backlash over her "not speaking up" which is already dumb, like, as far as I can tell she has no social media, but also she's a lawyer, she can't comment freely on cases, that could literally destroy the case

But she was trending bc people were saying she should be forgiven, for not posting. But also there are people adamant she not be forgiven. Because she should have spoken up sooner. Helping charge Benjamin Netanyahu with crimes against humanity is not good enough, she should have been posting, she needs to be held accountable for her lack of posting while she was, again, serving as a legal advisor on a international humans rights case against Benjamin Netanyahu.

Like when you're at the stage where people ask where a celebrity was, and the answer is "helping arrange an arrest warrant for Netanyahu", and your response is "why was she doing that instead of posting online" I really just have to conclude you think posting online is more important than anything else. Also that your online activism revolves around finding righteous ways to dislike celebrities you have entrenched parasocial relationships with that you rationalize by going "well I obsessively hate them so it's okay". But mostly the Posting Is More Important Than War Crimes Tribunals part

THIS IS SO FUCKING IMPORTANT! My best friend was turned into a meme on 4chan and 9gag and shit with everyone slut shaming her, and its fucking heartbreaking. People don’t understand the horror of seeing a picture of themselves on the internet with hundreds of thousands of people making fun of them. these people will most likely see these pictures online at some point. Theres no telling how they will react. Theres no telling what personal damage will occur to their self esteem. Do not post pictures of strangers on the internet. Do not reblog/repost these pictures either. Especially if they’re children. That is all.

Someone finally said it

ok some days being visibly homo is the most wonderful thing in the world. an old woman walking her dog stopped to say hello to me and I asked if i could say hi to her dog. she seemed really excited and told me "his name is rupert brooke. i named him after a gay poet from the era of the first world war. he had red hair just like my dogs fur". then she leans in and whispers like she's divulging some great secret and says "i don't usually tell people about the gay part"

I’ve told this one before, but: I was in a long-distance relationship in 2010. One time, after flying back into Toronto, I got a cab to my apartment. The cab driver, who was a recent Pakistani immigrant, asked where I had been travelling.

And I had to think about my safety as a passenger and a woman, but I decided to just tell him: “I was visiting my girlfriend in New York.” And he went quiet, and I was briefly terrified, and then he said, “It’s good here in Canada, for people like us.” AND THEN I FUCKING CRIED OBVIOUSLY.

It’s good to be visibly or openly queer, when you can be. There are so many more of us out there than you ever realize otherwise.
