“Don’t worry, I still have a couple of packets in my pockets!” Phichit yelled back at Seung Gil. “Just go!”

Phichit held out one more bug and played with it akin to a master and a dog.

“Want this waterbug, boy? Here you go!”

The Earth Prince tossed the bug as high as he could up the shore and watched the serpent consume it like a happy pet.

“You want more?”

The serpent looked at Phichit not with harsh, deadly eyes but that of a domesticated pet– round, eager and endearing.

“Let me hop on your back?” he asked, and the serpent happily lowered itself so Phichit could clamber on.

“Good boy, here have another treat!” He said, tossing a bug up and had the serpent catch it with its mouth.

Phichit tamed the serpent and the beast willingly gave the prince a ride on his back, skidding through the surface of the water for a fun ride.

“YEAAAAHHH!”

“Go forward. Slowly!” Min-So commanded as the line of soldiers made their way across as Phichit played about with the serpent.

“What the flameo…?”

“Your Highness!”

“Is he mad?”

Watching Phichit’s affinity with the beast, Seung-Gil had his supicion and really did not want this to be true.

He had a feeling that Phichit was the Avatar.

And yet, it felt false. For he knew the Water Tribe fellow had been designated the heavy duty for this time round, as well as the air nomad before him.

No matter. He was willing to risk his father’s judgement alongside the sheer fact he invested in so much just to make sure this Prince makes his way to the Fire Nation capital unharmed.

“Don’t let him out of your sight.” Seung-Gil had commanded the rest of the soldiers.

Lagging behind the squadron, the petite Uno kept an eye quietly on the Earth Prince. Seeing that it looked fun, he called out to the Earth Prince.

“Can I join?”

Phichit entertained the beast for as long as his pockets had enough bugs to give. His left pocket was starting to drain so he had to conserve the rations until he needed to share his right pocket's bugs.

While the whole of the fire nation's troop takes their fastest yet most careful treading out the Serpent's Pass, Phichit got close to the shore and heard the tiny soldier's request.

"Of course!" Phichit yelled back.

He gave the serpent a little tug to lower themselves to the shore as safely as possible. Phichit had the beast slither just by the sand and stopped right in front of Shoma as he held out his hand.

"Climb on in!"

But the serpent let out a growl in protest.

"Oh come on..." Phichit tossed a couple of waterbugs for Shoma to take. "Alright, give him an offering."

He watched as Shoma shakily extended his hand with the waterbug to the serpent and tensed as the beast studied him like he was potential food. Phichit relaxed when the serpent finally took the bug peacefully from Shoma's hand and allowed him to mount just behind Phichit.

"Hold on tight, okay?"

“Cuffs aren’t the most comfortable piece of accessories.” Phichit said in the most casual way to keep the air light.

If anything, being cuffed like this was the most degrading he’s ever had been in his life. With Han and Jin attentively holding the chains of the Earth Prince restraints, Phichit was as good as pinned down.

“Well, they’re for prisoners and captives.” Han supplied.

“Sorry, Your Highness. Just bear with it for the meantime.” Boyang added.

The Fire Nation troops treaded carefully through the Serpent’s pass in a single file. Phichit was right behind Han and ahead of Jin. The two were diligently warning him to watch his steps.

“You guys seem to be on the edge.” Phichit commented.

He could sense everyone’s anxiety and alertness.

“I think you guys should relax.”

Suddenly the ground started shaking. Soldiers ahead picked up the pace and Phichit ducked down to cover his head.

“What are you guys running away from?! Cover your heads!”

But it wasn’t just any earthquake. Waves started crashing and Phichit was still on the ground on his knees covering his head. The other end of the line retreated back and the other end went ahead, leaving the Earth Prince right in the middle where the Serpent emerged.

The Earth Prince just HAD to open his big mouth.

While it was fortunate that the rocky pass still held a strong enough pathway to support the rest of the squadron to cross, such motions would have to wait.

The Serpent had awoken, much to Seung-Gil’s annoyance, and to some degree…fear.

Arslan decided to lead his troops away from the line of danger, leaving Han and a few soldiers on one side, and Seung-Gil and the rest on the other.

“Be at the ready. Do not fire until the Serpent attacks.”

However, one of the soldiers were not very good with heeding instructions, albeit intentionally. Huy, who was right next to Seung-Gil, couldn’t hold back a sneeze. As he did so, he sneezed out an arc of flames, nearly searing off the prince’s eyebrows.

“…s-sorry, your Highness–”

Wonderful. If the Serpent was smart enough to catch onto Huy’s unintentional distraction, it would leave enough room for the rest of the soldiers to continue making their way across. That is depending on the Serpent’s next move. Was it towards the Earth Prince? Or onto one of the many firebenders?

Snakes hate fire, so by logic they would go for the Earth Prince. And yet, Seung-Gil was ready to release an all out attack once the Serpent makes its move.

The serpent was ready to lunge down at the Earth Prince who looked like dinner to the beast. It gave a terrifying roar and swept water to create a large wave.

Phichit trembled under the giant serpent, still in awe at the very existence.

"N-Nice.... snakey..."

The serpent lowered its head to Phichit.

Oh boy, I am so... breakfast.

"You're not going to want to eat me, Mr. Serpent." Phichit bargained. "I'm all bones and soil and I know you really hate soil, right? You don't want worms in your tummy... right?"

Phichit scurried for something in his wet pocket, anything. He could barely do anything with his chained state.

"Nice... snakey..."

Phichit pulled out what was left of his pockets and presented it to the snake.

"H-Here's a waterbug snack..." he offered with a trembling voice.

Phichit didn't know what would it benefit him offering the creature a snack from his home kingdom. It was ravenous for a snack.

Snack as in, him. And not in a sexy way either.

The serpent was about to eat Phichit but at the sight of the water bug, the beast was immediately tamed. The beast licked it off Phichit's palm and was suddenly asking for more like a dog.

"You like water bugs?"

The Serpent's Pass.

Phichit had read all about the Serpent's Pass but this was the first time he was to set foot on the historic land of danger.

It was a feared route.

Yet the Fire Prince did not waver.

"Oooh! The Serpent's Pass! I've read all about it!" he said, taking the bowl of food from Seung Gil.

He thanked the prince for food and tucked in.

"I've never set foot on the Serpent's Pass. They said that there's a large sea serpent protecting this area. But that's not real, right?"

It has to be a legend only.

Phichit was sure that the elders of the Earth Kingdom had only placed that rumor in order to scare off refugees. He didn't believe Celestino either when he said that the Serpent was very real.

"It's just a legend, I'm sure. Cool legend to be honest."

After eating Phichit thanked them for the food and emptied about a pitcher of water.

"Man, I've never drinked that much water. This place is so hot. How do you guys not sweat at all?"

Oh right.

Fire benders.

When the troops started to form their travel party outside of the drill, Phichit watched them out the window until he and Seung Gil were called to join them.

The two soldiers held up metal cuffs for their captive. Boyang Jin and Yan Han.

"Your transport is ready, Your Highness. The captive will be under our watch as per the commander's orders." Jin said.

“Oh… plays! Theater! I love theater! You have to take me to one!”

Phichit was absolutely excited to explore despite being a prisoner of the fire nation. He had trust in the fire prince that he would be left unharmed so while he was at it, why not visit some places, right?

“We barely have theater in the Earth Kingdom. But we do have insect snacks.”

The room went silent.

The soldiers were both stricken with shock.

Seung Gil’s face had a hint of it, if Phichit were to imagine harder.

“What?”

Phichit let out a loud groan.

“Don’t tell me you guys don’t have insect snacks?”

They all looked like they hadn’t heard of it before.

“Those are the best delicacies ever! My favorite has to be the deep fried grasshoppers and crickets on steroids. Those are so yummy and really crunchy! In fact, we also eat scorpion. Small but really good and crunchy! I’m not a fan of tarantulas though. They’re too hairy in my mouth and their butts are too gooey for my liking even if well cooked.”

………..

……….

Seung-Gil was visibly aghast, despite the fact his jaw hadn’t dropped.

“No, we haven’t had any of those, but that was….interesting information.”

He made it a reminder not to try those. Though if dared to, at least he was prepared.

“Regardless, we will have plenty kinds of food that might be similar to that of the Earth Kingdom.” Dinesh interjected, before Seung-Gil could think of anything to fill the empty space called silence. “Heck, we actually eat the meat of the Komodo Rhinos. It’s rumoured to be a tonic for manly strength—I bet if you tried some of that over the years, you’d be able to take down Commander Arslan in a fight!”

The dark skinned soldier was enthusiastically chattering away as he missed the icy glare Seung-Gil had casted on him. Though he was frankly unsure on how to speak to the Prince himself, since there wasn’t much else that he knew of the aFire Nation that wasn’t already tainted by biased history books the Earth Prince might have pored through all his life. Looking outside, he noticed the sun was starting to set. Gesturing to Huy, Seung-Gil gave his command.

“We’ll stop soon, we need to save up on firepower before we continue. Once we pass through this thicket to the entrance of Serpent’s Pass, we will make camp. Relay that.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Huy swiftly left while Dinesh kept chattering away.

—————————————-

At the controls room, Huy noticed that Arslan barely spoke a word since he arrived back.

“Commander Arslan.”

“What now—oh, it’s just you.”

“We’ll stop for the evening once we near Serpent’s Pass. Relay to the soldiers.”

Arslan nodded as he reached for the intercom in the drill.

“All soldiers take note. We’ll set down camp at Serpent’s Pass. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir!” The roar of a few hundred men was heard throughout the whole drill.

Phichit was kind of disappointed to know that there weren't any fried bugs being sold in the Fire Nation as compared to the abundance of it in Ba Sing Se. However, Dinesh did somehow comfort him that there were some dishes that might be similar to that of the Earth Kingdom's.

"You eat the Komodo Rhinos?!" he interjected. "But aren't those your mounts?! Do you guys eat your mounts when they die?!"

Certainly, that was a shock but it was nowhere near the kind of delicacy Phichit was searching for.

He wanted bugs, not meat. But that didn't mean the Earth Kingdom citizens only served fried insects on their platter.

"Well, we have the common meat such as pork, chicken, and beef but never rhino. Beef's already hard to tenderize and soften. It consumes lots of our firewood. What more if it was rhino meat?!"

Phichit took a few seconds to realize that the fire nation didn't really need to keep burning firewood.

They only need to use their firebending skills to cook the meat.

"Okay, don't answer that, I think I know why now."

Much like how the earth kingdom citizens use their bending to good use in farming, fire benders can use it for cooking.

Maybe it would be nice to marry a firebender who could cook. Phichit imagined himself using his earthbending to do the farming and when he gets home, he would bring food for his spouse to cook with firebending.

Dinesh proved to be quite the entertainer as Phichit listened eagerly to the soldier's stories about their culture.

Then the drill shook with the sound of soldiers voices.

"What was that?" Phichit cut in.
