Out Of Context WIPs

Rules: Pick a bunch of your WIPs and summarize them as badly as possible, then ask your followers to vote on which one they’d be most likely to read. Multiple/all/none options are completely optional.

I've seen this go around and thought I'd try my hand at it. (not that I expect a lot of engagement, due to being mostly absent over here)

In any case, these are either WIPs I'm actively working on right now and won't be posted until I'm done, or I actively want to revive what's been dormant for too many years. Not all of these are fanfic.

So, pick your favorite. 😉

✨And it's a wrap! - WIP Big Bang Complete ✨

Story Title: Hands Off, He’s Mine!

Fandom: Teen Wolf

Summary: In a world in which Laura and Derek never left Beacon Hills after the fire, the three surviving Hales have found a new home with the Stilinskis. With the sheriff needing surgery, an unknown amount of hunters in town, and Peter having gone missing, Stiles’ college break proves to be much more daunting than expected. But he’ll do anything to keep his loved one(s) safe.

Warnings: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, the Hales didn't leave Beacon Hills, Found Family, Permanent Injury, that one applies to Peter, Magical Sheriff Stilinski, Hurt Sheriff Stilinski, But He'll Get Better, Werewolf Hunters, Kidnapping, Magical Stiles Stilinski, College Student Stiles Stilinski, Angst with a Happy Ending, Future Fic, Pre-Relationship, Getting Together

Characters: Peter Hale, Stiles Stilinski, Laura Hale, Derek Hale, Sheriff Stilinski, Original Characters, Gerard Argent, Jordan Parrish, Chris Argent

Pairings: Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski

When I Started: November 2022, for the Steter Secret Santa.

How I Lost My Shit: Like with my last chaptered Steter fic, I thought for sure it'd be shorter than it ended up being. I got 3 chapters done by the deadline for the Secret Santa event. I even got 2 more chapters done at the beginning of this year. And then I dropped the ball. Because me getting something finished without a deadline looming? It's less likely than you think! 🙈

How I Finished My Shit: Because it worked so well last year, I signed up for the WIP Big Bang again. But because there was so much time before posting would begin, my brain went "You know what's much cooler than writing? Starting your nth crocheting project! And reading lots and lots of books. What could go wrong?" Well, what could go wrong was this: Starting to work on the fic again so late that the first participants of the event had already started posting before I opened my document to reread what I already had. Whoops? And because I apparently don't learn from past mistakes, I needed 2 extensions again. Because I didn't account for the ECS (the Exploding Chapter Syndrome). Meaning, I innocently believed I'd be able to maintain my previously established average word count per chapter. News flash: Of course I didn't. 🙄 But I did it! And this year, I only needed one half-nighter instead of two all-nighters to get it done. (I won't mention that I stayed 14k under last year's fic. I'll choose to imagine I got a little better at time management, instead. 😇)

I find it personally offensive how many bad writers can get published so easily.

I used to find it reassuring, like, "Haha, wow, if THIS can get published..." but now I take it to mean "It doesn't matter if your book is good or not, all that matters is if you're in the right social circles (and you're not)"

As someone who used to acquire for an indie publisher ... it sucks on the other end, too. We don't WANT to work on shitty books with shitty writing. But bossman wants to make money, and shitty writer has marketing clout/knows the right people/is already published (even if it's only online/ebook).

I used to read the most AMAZING submissions I'd be forced to pass on. Like, there was one, a literary fantasy featuring a bi deaf protagonist who learns how to navigate a spectrum of relationships while discovering herself (I don't want to give too many details out of respect to the author/don't want her concept stolen) and I couldn't get it acquired no matter how thorough my proposal and marketing plan was because she was a debut author with fewer than 10k Twitter followers and we needed that advance money for another Fifty Shades knockoff (this was a few years ago lol).

BUT PLEASE DON'T LET THAT DISCOURAGE YOU! If you're a writer, and you're trying to get published, don't give up!! If your first novel isn't getting traction with either a house or agency, publish it yourself on amazon. Get that "debut" moniker away from your name. Prove you can sell your shit and keep working.

A good agent will work with you to come up with a marketing/publicity proposal. That will be huge in getting houses to notice your work - makes the acquisitions team's job easier as they can point to it and tell bossman "we have a plan". Look online for titles that have high ratings/are on the NYT list that can be compared to yours. That helps give acquisitions an idea of what they're getting into - and how to represent your book to their ED/publisher.

A good agent will also help you target editors/imprints whose lists match your book, increasing your odds of getting positive feedback or even constructive feedback. If I had a submission that just wasn't quite ready for publication, I'd give detailed notes of what I wanted and ask them to revise and resubmit.

Keep writing! Even if a book isn't picked up, start your next. It's so attractive to see an author with several unpublished works ready to be polished if you already like the work that's submitted. And more writing only refines your skills.

Yes, bad writers get published. And too many good writers, even when published, go unrecognized (if you like southern gothic fiction a la Where the Crawdads Sing, go read The Past is Never, which came out four months earlier and got NO national attention but is BEAUTIFUL). Be such a good writer that you break those odds.

Because you can. I've read your stuff on Tumblr. On Ao3. On Fanfiction.net. On Wattpad. You can do it.

24 crocheted coasters for an Advent calendar project. I provided "door" number 3, and finally remembered (4 days late 😂) that I'm now free to share pictures without spoiling any of the recipients. I chose these colors to depict a very stylized sun in the sky. Diameter of the coasters: 4" (10cm) #crochet #coasters #circles #gradient #white #blue #yellow #orange #red https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl4buFWLtK8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When I Started: July 2021, during Steter week. I got the very bright idea that I could do one story with one chapter per prompt/theme. It was supposed to be a fun little thing, 18k, tops...

How I Lost My Shit: It was clear from the start that I wouldn't finish the story during the event. But I got 2 chapters done, thinking to myself that I could keep the pace of maybe 1 chapter per week. But once the pressure of a deadline was gone, so was my motivation. So I had a good chunk of chapter 3 finished since mid August in my WIPs, collecting dust, and once in a while I remembered it and felt guilty.

How I Finished My Shit: Frankly? By losing my shit! Repeatedly. 😆 It started at signing up last-minute because I began fearing right away that I'd massively panic by the end. Do you believe in self-fulfilling prophecies? I think I should because I made relatively steady progress, but it was going slooooowly. And then my posting date neared. Guess what? I lost my shit! Because I was 3 chapters away from being finished. So I asked for an extension. Guess what? Yeah... You got it. The posting date neared and I was still 1.5 chapters away from being finished. So I claimed the very last still available posting date. And GUESS WHAT??? I pulled 2 all-nighters, got 3 hours of sleep in 48 hours (and counting, because I'll have to start working in half an hour), was 8 hours late for my posting date by my own time zone, but thankfully not by PST... AND I FINISHED MY SHIT!!! 🥳🥳🥳 (but seriously, I don't recommend my approach 😜, and I couldn't have done it if I hadn't had someone virtually holding my hand for the last 3 chapters, so: THANK YOU, dear friend!)

Tips for Writing a Difficult Scene

Every writer inevitably gets to that scene that just doesn't want to work. It doesn't flow, no matter how hard you try. Well, here are some things to try to get out of that rut:

1. Change the weather

  • I know this doesn't sound like it'll make much of a difference, but trust me when I say it does.
  • Every single time I've tried this, it worked and the scene flowed magically.

2. Change the POV

  • If your book has multiple POV characters, it might be a good idea to switch the scene to another character's perspective.
  • 9/10 times, this will make the scene flow better.

3. Start the scene earlier/later

  • Oftentimes, a scene just doesn't work because you're not starting in the right place.
  • Perhaps you're starting too late and giving too little context. Perhaps some description or character introspection is needed before you dive in.
  • Alternatively, you may be taking too long to get to the actual point of the scene. Would it help to dive straight into the action without much ado?

4. Write only the dialogue

  • If your scene involves dialogue, it can help immensely to write only the spoken words the first time round.
  • It's even better if you highlight different characters' speech in different colors.
  • Then, later on, you can go back and fill in the dialogue tags, description etc.

5. Fuck it and use a placeholder

  • If nothing works, it's time to move on.
  • Rather than perpetually getting stuck on that one scene, use a placeholder. Something like: [they escape somehow] or [big emotional talk].
  • And then continue with the draft.
  • This'll help you keep momentum and, maybe, make the scene easier to write later on once you have a better grasp on the plot and characters.
  • Trust me, I do this all the time.
  • It can take some practice to get past your Type A brain screaming at you, but it's worth it.

So, those are some things to try when a scene is being difficult. I hope that these tips help :)

Made another gradient shawl. This one is for my grandma. I adapted the pattern of the last shawl, to make up for the mistakes I made with it, and to make it look a bit more interesting. Still not *perfect*, but close enough. Added two buttons this time to make sure it won't fall off the shoulders while moving around. Size after blocking: 122 x 63 cm (about 48 x 25") #crochet #shawl #gradient #bobbel #gray #black #purple https://www.instagram.com/p/CZdLUBRIVmo/?utm_medium=tumblr

You’ve been told your entire life that no one in your family drinks. Ignoring that, you make plans with your friends to get black out drunk on your 21st birthday. When you wake up the next morning, your friends are huddled in a circle of salt, holding knives, and staring at you with wide eyes.

And that's why holding back information is a bad idea. Communication is key. 😉

Most people would ask the genie for wealth, love, immortality, or something along those lines. You asked the genie for a permit which literally just said “I Can do What I Want” with your name signed under it, legally valid in every single country on Earth.
